Missed the first Making Tax Digital deadline on 7 August?

You are not alone. HMRC is not issuing penalty points for late quarterly updates in this first year but the obligation has not gone away and the next one lands on 7 November.

In this week's LinkedIn newsletter I cover:

What a missed quarterly update actually means for your records
Where sole traders and landlords keep getting caught out
How one client went from a shoebox of receipts to a twenty minute monthly routine

If your records are not quite where they should be now is the time to sort it before November creeps up.

Read more below.

The first MTD quarterly submission was due on 7 August. If you missed it there's no penalty yet but the next one is closer than it looks.

The summer lull is the best time to fix the thing you have been avoiding all year. Your books.

For a lot of SMEs the quieter weeks are the only real chance to come up for air. Fewer orders. Fewer meetings. A bit more breathing room. It is the perfect window to get the finances straight before autumn picks up the pace again.

Because messy books rarely fix themselves. The pile only grows. And the longer it is left the harder it is to untangle and the more it costs you in missed payments and missed opportunities.

Our latest article looks at how SMEs can use the summer to tidy up. Tidy books in July/August means fewer headaches in October. A quiet summer is a gift. Use it.

It has been a couple of months since the Small Business Sunday award and now the excitement has settled a little, I have had time to reflect on what it really means.

When you run a small business the day to day can sweep you along. There is always another deadline another client another set of books to put right. You rarely stop to look up and take stock of how far you have come.

This award gave me that moment to pause.

It is a lovely thing to be recognised. But the recognition was never really the goal. The goal has always been simpler. To take the worry of finances off the shoulders of business owners so they can get on with what they do best.

Thank you for your trust your support and your kind words along the way. Here is to continuing the work that earned it.

Summer can be quiet for fundraising. But it's rarely quiet for your charity's outgoings.

Our latest article looks at how to stay financially resilient through the summer, including:

βœ… Forecasting cash flow so you can see the gap before it arrives
βœ… Making the most of your reserves without eating into them
βœ… Timing grant income and claims such as Gift Aid
βœ… Keeping costs under review during the slower weeks
βœ… Planning your autumn fundraising while there is breathing room.

A resilient charity is one that plans for the quiet spells as carefully as the busy ones.

Good record keeping isn't the boring bit. It's what holds the whole business together.

When your books are in order you know exactly where you stand. What you are owed. What you owe. Whether next month is covered.

When they are not, the cost shows up everywhere. Invoices go unchased. VAT deadlines ambush you. Your accountant spends the year end untangling guesswork. Expenses you could have claimed slip away.

Tidy records mean:
βœ… Faster payments
βœ… A clear view of cash flow
βœ… A smoother cheaper year end
βœ… Confidence if HMRC comes knocking

And with Making Tax Digital rolling out, digital record keeping is no longer just good practice for many sole traders and landlords. It is the law.

Good books rarely happen by accident. They come from a steady routine or a steady pair of hands.

Shoebox not a system? Let us help you get it straight.

There is a gap in most small businesses. It sits between everyday admin and the accountant. Renu fills it.

Your admin team can raise invoices and file paperwork. Your accountant handles the year end and the tax return.

But who keeps the books accurate week to week?
Who chases late payers before they become a cash flow problem?
Who makes sure the numbers your accountant receives are already in good shape?

That is the space Renu works in.
The result for our clients is fewer surprises, healthier cash flow and a tidier records.
If your finances feel like they slip through this gap let us bridge it for you. Let's Connect: https://www.linkedin.com/in/renu-elston/

The summer break should not mean your finances grind to a halt.
Holidays, staff annual leave and quieter weeks can leave the books in a muddle by September.

Invoices slip through the cracks. Payments go unchased. The VAT deadline creeps up while everyone is out of office.

We keep things ticking over so you can switch off properly. Whether you need a steady pair of hands for the day to day or help digging out from under a backlog we have it covered.

How we can support you this summer:
βœ… Bookkeeping
βœ… Invoicing and credit control
βœ… Cash flow monitoring
βœ… Payroll and VAT support
βœ… Clearing a finance backlog

Come back from your break to a tidy set of books and healthy cash flow rather than a pile of admin.
