Although we are only in August, now is the time to start preparing for colder months and checking the condition of your oil storage tank.
The sad reality is tanks don’t last forever and the average lifespan of a fuel storage tank is between 10-15 years.
However, tanks may still have a working life after 15 years with careful maintenance.
We would always recommend checking your tank every month or so, or more often if it is more than 10 years old.
Plastic oil storage tanks cannot be repaired once they have started to deteriorate, therefore noticing the signs of a fault developing is essential to prevent an accidental spill.
If you need a replacement tank visit our website for a full range of plastic and metal tanks.

If you are planning to harvest your rainwater into a specialised tank, do make yourself familiar with the Health & Safety rules first!

1. Never drink collected rainwater that has not been filtered. While you can use filtered water for gardening, landscaping, and washing cars, it’s important that the water collected goes through a decontamination process before it can be consumed.

2. Never water vegetables with collected rainwater that has not yet been filtered. Instead use the unfiltered rainwater for gardening, use it on flowers, trees, shrubs, as well as other types of plants that are not edible.

3. Never use harvested rainwater for a paddling or swimming pool. Any bacteria, parasites, fungi or even viruses on it are harmful to the skin, eyes, mouth, and even internal organs.

4. Never allow collected rainwater to pool anywhere in your property or in your collection system.

5. Make sure that every storage tank is secured. Water storage tanks are bulky and could cause injuries if they fall on people and they are also drowning hazards so need a secure lid.

The Dangers of Sludge in Your Oil Tank

If you use heating oil you might not think much about the oil tank sludge that sits at the bottom of your tank. This sludge is what builds up there over time and can be the reason your boiler sputters or stops working shortly after a refill.

What Is Tank Sludge?

Oil Tank Sludge is a dark, sticky layer of sediment that forms at the bottom of a heating oil tank, and is made up of:

• Dirt and debris that enter the tank
• Rust flakes from metal tank surfaces
• Water from condensation or rain ingress
• Micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi that live in damp fuel

Water in the tank encourages microbial growth and rust. These combine with other particles to form a thick goo that settles beneath clean oil.

Why Sludge Causes Blockages After a Refill

When you let your oil tank get very low before refilling, this can allow more air to enter the tank. This promotes condensation on the inside walls, which leads to more water at the bottom, which helps oil tank sludge to form.
When a tanker refills the tank from nearly empty, the incoming fuel disturbs that sediment layer. Sludge mixes with the new oil and travels through the fuel line. If it reaches the boiler, it can quickly:

• Block fuel filters
• Restrict flow through supply lines
• Clog the nozzles and injectors
• Cause your heating system to work harder or fail
In many cases the first sign of a sludge problem is an unexpected boiler fault soon after an oil delivery.

Spot The Signs You Might Have Oil Tank Sludge Issues
Things to look out for:

• Your heating seems less efficient than usual
• Frequent boiler noise or irregular burning
• Filters need changing more often
• Unexplained fuel line blockages

These symptoms can point to sludge entering the system rather than the fresh oil.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters
The best way to reduce sludge-related issues is good tank care:

• Keep the tank topped up, as a fuller tank reduces condensation and water build-up
• Schedule regular inspections with a qualified engineer who can check for water and sediment
• Change filters as recommended. Clean filters help prevent debris reaching the boiler
• Remove water promptly as water at the bottom of the tank is a key contributor to sludge formation

If sludge is already present, professional cleaning by an OFTEC-registered technician is advised. Attempting to clear sludge yourself is messy and often unsuccessful.

Preventing Sludge Build-Up
Reduce sludge at the source:

• Avoid running the tank very low
• Seal lids and vents to keep rain out
• Use only quality fuel from reputable suppliers
• Consider fuel treatments designed to reduce microbial growth

These steps make it less likely that sediments will get stirred up and carried into the boiler.

Why Proper Oil Storage Supports Reliable Heating

Storing heating oil correctly at your home plays an important role in keeping your system reliable and reducing the risk of breakdowns. A well-maintained tank that is kept at a sensible level is less likely to suffer from condensation, water contamination, or sludge build up. Tanks should always be secure, weather resistant, and protected from damage, with lids and vents properly sealed to prevent rainwater entering. Positioning the tank on a stable base and arranging regular visual checks helps identify early signs of corrosion, leaks, or debris before they affect your heating. When storage conditions are good and oil levels are not allowed to fall too low, the fuel remains cleaner, deliveries are safer, and your boiler is far less likely to experience problems after refilling.

What causes sludge to build up in an oil tank?

Oil Tank Sludge forms from a mix of dirt, rust, water from condensation, and degraded fuel. Water encourages bacteria and fungi, which accelerate sludge formation.

Why does my boiler fail after my oil delivery?

When a tank is very low, sludge settles at the bottom. Refilling agitates it, allowing debris to enter fuel lines, filters, and the burner nozzle.

Why Keeping Your Oil Tank Topped Up Matters
Allowing your tank to run too low increases the risk of oil tank sludge being disturbed, condensation forming, and heating problems after a refill. These issues are far less likely when oil is delivered before levels drop to low.
By topping up before the oil gets to low, you can protect your heating system. This will avoid unexpected breakdowns and reduce the need of costly callouts. Ordering your heating oil in good time gives you peace of mind, keeps your boiler running smoothly, and helps ensure your home stays warm when you need it most.

Cowes Week 1st to 7th August 2026
Cowes Week is an annual sailing regatta held in and around Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The 2026 edition is especially significant because it marks the event's 200th anniversary (bicentenary), with racing scheduled for 1–7 August 2026 and a program of commemorative celebrations alongside the competition.
The regatta brings together professional sailors, experienced amateurs, and club racers for a week of competitive sailing on the Solent, one of the world's best-known racing waters. Multiple fleets compete each day in different classes, creating a continuous schedule of races while Cowes itself hosts live entertainment, hospitality, and waterfront activities that attract large numbers of spectators.
