Another specialist glazing project progressing at Leicester College, with 20No glazed units to be replaced within a large dual-pitched rooflight system, followed by a comprehensive clean of the glazing and flashings.

A key element of this project is the specialist access arrangement required to safely reach the rooflight glazing. Due to the configuration and location of the rooflight system, conventional access methods would have been difficult and potentially disruptive.

To overcome this, our team hopped onto the ropes, providing a controlled and efficient means of accessing the glazing from above and within the atrium environment.

Our rope access technicians are able to safely position themselves directly alongside the glazing, allowing our qualified glazing operatives to carry out the required inspection, removal and replacement works while maintaining appropriate exclusion zones and control measures.

The access solution provides several key benefits:
▪️ IRATA-qualified rope access technicians for specialist high-level access
▪️ Safe and controlled access to otherwise difficult-to-reach glazing
▪️ Reduced reliance on large-scale temporary access systems
▪️ Minimal disruption to the surrounding building and occupants
▪️ Controlled positioning for glazing removal and installation
▪️ Specialist lifting arrangements incorporated into the works
▪️ Full project-specific RAMS and rescue arrangements
▪️ Qualified glazing technicians and rope access operatives working together
▪️ Complete project management from access through to completion

The combination of specialist glazing, IRATA rope access and controlled lifting techniques allows us to tackle complex rooflight works safely and efficiently, particularly where conventional access solutions are impractical.

At Specialist High Level Glazing Ltd, we specialise in solving difficult access problems — from high-level glazing and rooflights through to façade maintenance, inspection and remedial works.

Specialist Access. Heavy Lifting. Precision Glazing.

Another project where careful planning and specialist equipment were essential to deliver a safe and efficient glazing replacement.

Our team was tasked with replacing an oversized defective DGU, measuring over 3 metres in length and weighing in excess of 400kg. Due to the size and weight of the unit, a conventional replacement method simply wasn’t an option.
The works required a carefully coordinated lifting operation, including:
A specialist crane, selected specifically to operate safely within the restricted space available.

A dedicated 6 in-line vacuum-powered lifting system to securely handle both the existing and replacement glazed units.

Our custom secondary safety device, providing additional support throughout the lifting and installation process.

A full contract lift, including lifting plans, flight path and radius drawings, a qualified Appointed Person, slinger/signaller and continuous communication throughout the operation.

A specialist ground-level glazing team to remove and reinstate the external pressure plates and cappings and ensure the vacuum lifting equipment was correctly positioned.

Full highways and public safety management, including a bus lane closure, pedestrian walkway closure and bus stop suspension.
Controlled removal, transportation and disposal of the defective oversized glazed unit.

Fully cordoned exclusion zones, with a dedicated ground marshal maintaining public safety throughout the works.

Projects of this scale are about far more than simply replacing a piece of glass. From the initial planning and permits through to the lifting operation and final installation, every stage requires coordination, specialist equipment and experienced personnel.

At Specialist High Level Glazing, we specialise in delivering complex glazing solutions where access, size, weight and logistics present a challenge.

Our latest project saw the successful replacement of one oversized double glazed unit (DGU) at the Radisson RED Hotel, Greenwich, located on the 9th-floor façade. Due to the size of the unit, restricted access and operational constraints of a live hotel environment, the project required a carefully coordinated lifting and access strategy.

The Challenge

Replacing large façade glazing at height presents significant logistical and safety challenges. Traditional access equipment was not suitable for this location, necessitating a bespoke solution that maintained the highest safety standards while minimising disruption to the client and building occupants.
Our Solution

Following a comprehensive site survey, engineering assessment and lift planning process, our team developed a specialist installation methodology incorporating:
• Mobile crane lifting operations
• IRATA-certified rope access technicians
• Powered vacuum lifting technology
• Internal glazing specialists
• Project-specific lifting plans, RAMS and exclusion zone management

Working in complete coordination, the replacement unit was lifted by mobile crane along a predetermined flight path before being received by our rope access technicians. The glazing was then expertly manoeuvred into position while our internal installation team completed the alignment, fixing, sealing and final quality checks.

Throughout the operation, continuous communication was maintained between the appointed person, crane operator, slinger/signaller, rope access technicians and glazing operatives, ensuring every stage of the lift was completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with the approved lifting plan.

Project Outcome
✔ Successful replacement of one oversized insulated glass unit
✔ Completed safely within a single working shift
✔ Zero incidents or safety observations
✔ Minimal disruption to hotel operations and surrounding public areas
✔ Fully sealed, weatherproofed and handed back to the client on programme

⚠️ How do you replace a fractured glass roof panel above a busy shopping centre without disrupting the public below?

At Brunel Shopping Centre, Swindon, our team recently completed the replacement of a damaged laminated glass panel within the central atrium roof.

Using a combination of IRATA rope access technicians and IPAF-operated MEWPs, we safely accessed the defective panel at height while maintaining a fully controlled exclusion zone below.

The project involved:

✅ Specialist rope access operations
✅ Removal of external cappings and pressure plates
✅ Installation of a replacement laminated glass panel
✅ Full weatherproof reinstatement
✅ Ground-level marshalling and exclusion zones
✅ Completion within a single shift

Projects like this demonstrate why rope access can often provide a safer, faster and more cost-effective alternative to traditional access methods.

A great effort from the team and another successful high-level glazing project completed safely.

Recently completed a challenging oversized DGU replacement project involving the removal and replacement of a defective unit with new like-for-like glass to exactly match the existing specification, performance requirements, and appearance of the façade.

The replacement unit measured over 4m long and weighed in excess of 145kg, so detailed planning and specialist lifting equipment were essential from the outset.

To carry out the works safely within the restricted working area, we utilised a specialist spider mini-crane complete with a dedicated 6 in-line vacuum suction lifter to safely manoeuvre both the defective and replacement glass during the lifting operation. Alongside this, we also used our own secondary safety retention system throughout mobilisation and installation for additional protection and control.

Externally, access was achieved using a MEWP/scissor lift to allow safe removal and reinstatement of pressure plates and cappings, as well as accurate positioning of the power sucker during installation.

Due to the size of the defective DGU, specialist preparation was required to safely remove, transport, and dispose of the unit from site. All ground level areas below the works were fully cordoned off and controlled at all times by a dedicated ground marshal to ensure safety for the building and its tenants throughout the works.

A great example of how the right planning, equipment, and team can deliver complex glazing replacements safely and with minimal disruption on occupied buildings.

Case Study: Glazing Replacement & Ventilation Upgrade – Parliament View, Lambeth High Street

This project involved a comprehensive glazing and ventilation upgrade at Parliament View, located on Lambeth High Street in London. The works were designed to enhance façade performance, improve ventilation, and maintain the building’s architectural integrity. Due to restricted access and the scale of the glazed units, the project utilised a combination of a large mobile crane and IRATA-trained rope access technicians to ensure safe and efficient completion of works.

The works included the Removal of vents above fixed windows, boarding up of redundant vent openings for safety and weatherproofing, Installation and commissioning of new ventilation units and the Replacement of 2 large, glazed façade units using crane-assisted lifting

A hybrid approach was adopted, combining a large mobile crane for heavy lifting and IRATA-trained rope access technicians for installation and detailed works at height. This reduced the need for extensive scaffolding and minimised disruption.

The crane was used to lift and position the two large façade glazing units safely into place. Detailed lift planning and coordination ensured smooth ex*****on within restricted site conditions. IRATA-certified technicians carried out the installation and sealing of glazing units, as well as vent removal and replacement works. Their expertise allowed precise work in hard-to-reach areas while maintaining high safety standards.

This project demonstrates the effectiveness of combining modern access techniques with specialist lifting solutions. The integration of a large mobile crane and IRATA-trained technicians enabled the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of complex façade works in a constrained urban environment.
