A little surprise we came across today—a bumblebee nest safely tucked away beneath a customer's decking. Under an old sledge, beneath a foot of dirt.....

Bumblebees are important pollinators and are generally very gentle if left undisturbed. Their nests are temporary, usually lasting just one season, so in many cases the best solution is to leave them alone and let nature take its course.

As this customer was hosting an end of school party - there was a genuine concern risk. It's always best to seek professional advice before taking any action yourself. All this customer had noticed was a few bees buzzing around, going in and out of the deck. Little did they know a fairly large bumblebee best was humming away under their feet.

Deck opened as neatly as possible, digging through the mud and dirt and we found the red overturned sledge providing perfect cover for the nest. The best was removed with as little disruption as possible and removed to a safe place. The deck was put back together with new struts to ensure it was safe to walk on.

Tree Bumblebee Nest

It's not what you thought a bees nest looked like?

Expecting a beautiful comb like structure?

Bumblebee nest are totally different to honey bees.!!!

🐝They build messy sticky clusters surrounded by insulating materials.
🐝They often occupy existing cavities rather than constructing a nest from scratch. Common locations include bird boxes, tree holes, roof voids, compost bins, and wall cavities.
🐝The brood cells, or eggs, are rounded capsules rather than the regimented hexagonal combs of a honey bee hive.

Making sure the nest stays complete and not damaged, you can relocate these wonderful critters giving people AND the bees a happier future.

Always try to relocate the bees to a site a minimum of a mile away and try to put the nest in a position similar to the one you found them in.

Tree Bumblebees post nest removal

Today's fun included the removal of a "TREE BUMBLEBEE" (bombus hypnoram) nest from this customers roof soffit.

Bumblebees, as a rule of thumb can be left where they are. But this nest was upsetting the owner and worrying their grandchildren. So they did the right thing and called PCB to come and relocate the nest.

Bumblers are superb pollinators and are vital in the eco system and we will always do our very best to save and relocate them rather than exterminate them!!!

Back tomorrow to do a thorough clean up and rebuild the soffit making sure this time there is no entry point for any future bees.
