The Threshing Barn.
The largest of the old farm buildings, once the heart of the working yard. Today it’s a double-height home built around its original oak frame, with the roof structure and trusses left exposed and celebrated rather than boxed away.
It’s the second of three new homes we created here, each carved from the original agricultural buildings and now let out.
The barn’s scale gave us room to be ambitious: a full-height glazed staircase climbs through the centre of the plan, timber-clad in oak to match the old frame, with the original beams left visible overhead. Clad in black timber and topped with a reclaimed clay-tile roof, it sits comfortably alongside the smaller dairy conversion next door, the two buildings sharing a material language while retaining their own character.
Outside, a newly landscaped courtyard, finished in resin-bound gravel, ties the whole yard together, with the farmhouse’s garaging and ancillary space arranged around it.
These photos show the barn as it is now, finished, occupied, and once again doing what these buildings do best: anchoring the farmyard.
