The homes we're most proud of aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets.

They're the ones where, years later, a family is still getting exactly what they asked for. The kitchen that works. The room that changed how the household operates. The space that earns its place every single day.

That rarely comes from spending more. It comes from starting with the right questions - about how a family actually uses their home, what's likely to change, and what matters most when trade-offs have to be made.

A generous budget spent on the wrong brief still produces a home that doesn't quite work. A well-built brief, even on a tighter one, produces a home that does.

"We definitely don't have bats."

It's one of the most common things we hear before a planning application goes in. But it's definitely worth double-checking, even if you're sure.

The UK has 18 species of bat - almost a quarter of all our mammal species - and every one of them is legally protected.

The common pipistrelle alone numbers an estimated 3 million across the country, and it roosts specifically in roof spaces, cavity walls and behind soffit boards... exactly the kind of features found in almost every property across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds.

The area's mix of farmland, hedgerows and period properties is exactly the habitat bats favour. And according to Natural England's own guidance, you can't assess bat presence by the age or type of a building alone, which is why so many people are surprised when a survey comes back positive.

Bat surveys can only be carried out between May and September. Miss that window and the risk is that your planning application stalls - not for a few weeks, but for a full year.

The surveys can be commissioned now, even if your project is still in the early stages. It's one of those steps that costs very little to do early but a lot if you leave it too late.

“Can you design a low-energy home without it looking like a glass box?”

It’s one of the biggest misconceptions around sustainable design - that performance dictates style.

In reality, sustainability is a way of thinking, not an aesthetic. A low-energy home can look like a Georgian townhouse, a country cottage or a contemporary build. What matters isn’t the style - it’s what’s built into the fabric.

High levels of insulation.
Airtight construction (without losing the ability to open a window).
Careful orientation for light and warmth.
Thoughtful shading to prevent overheating.

The result? Stable temperatures all year round. No draughts. No sudden swings from too hot to too cold. Lower running costs. Cleaner air. Quieter interiors. A home that feels solid, calm and comfortable every single day.

Passivhaus principles are often described as the gold standard - not because they impose a look, but because they provide a science-backed framework for performance. Many homeowners aim for 80–90% of those standards without pursuing formal certification, achieving exceptional comfort and efficiency along the way.

And as building regulations tighten, the gap between “standard” and high-performance homes is narrowing. Sustainability isn’t an add-on anymore - it’s increasingly expected, and increasingly valued.

The real question isn’t “Do I want a sustainable home?”
It’s “How well do I want my home to perform?”

Ever walked into a beautiful period home and thought… why doesn’t this flow properly?

That was the starting point for this renovation in Reading, Berkshire. A house full of character - but with a layout that felt disconnected and impractical for modern family life.

The transformation centres around a statement glass kitchen and dining extension that draws daylight deep into the plan and opens the home seamlessly to the garden. More than just an addition, it allowed the entire layout to be reconfigured - creating intuitive flow, better proportions and spaces that genuinely support everyday living.

The result is a home that keeps its heritage, but finally works the way it should: light-filled, practical and ready for both busy family life and relaxed entertaining.

New Planning Consent - North Wessex Downs AONB, Near Newbury

We’re pleased to share that planning consent has been granted for the extension and refurbishment of a much-loved family home.

To the front, the design refines and rebalances the façade. The existing garage will be incorporated into the home, with a new porch introduced to better define the entrance and bring clarity to the fenestration. An infill extension improves both the composition of the front elevation and the internal ground-floor layout, while also enabling more proportionate bedrooms above and the conversion of the loft into additional accommodation.

Internally, the plan has been rationalised to create a more fluid, practical layout suited to modern family life. To the rear, a carefully aligned extension enhances usability and connection to the garden, with landscaping to support indoor–outdoor living.

The external materials will be refreshed: limewashed brickwork, a rendered central gable, clay tile roofing and lighter window frames to give the home a calmer, more cohesive character.

Sustainability has been integral to the approach. Following a fabric-first principle, the project includes upgraded insulation during re-roofing, new high-performance windows, external insulation where appropriate and the continued use of existing solar panels on site. Local materials and trades will be prioritised wherever possible.

A thoughtful evolution of a home in an exceptional setting - we’re looking forward to sharing this project as it progresses.
