There's a difference between a building designed for livestock and one that's been adapted to house them.

Agri Span was designed for agricultural use from the start. The documentation specifies it:

→ Maximum individual animal weight of 343kg.
→ Stocking density of 5.0m² per animal.
→ AHDB-based floor area guidance built into the specification.

Ridge, side and gable openings with livestock side netting create a naturally ventilated environment through the stack effect. Drainage is built in from the outset, with gutters and outlets specified as part of the design. The building goes into the ground directly by ground screw or concrete anchor, with a clear internal span and no posts in the way.

Around now is when UK livestock farmers find out pretty quickly whether their housing is up to the job.

SFI26 Window 2 is expected to open this month.

Window 1 in June was limited to smaller farms, Window 2 is open to all farmers who:
→ Are registered with the RPA and have a Single Business Identifier (SBI).
→ Have at least 3 hectares of eligible agricultural land.

The total budget is £240 million. Any funding left unallocated from Window 1 rolls into Window 2, so the budget available this month could be bigger than expected.

Most of the SFI26 conversation has focused on land management actions. Capital grant funding within the scheme can also connect to farm infrastructure, including livestock housing. For farms with autumn housing decisions already in the planning, it's worth understanding how the two fit together before those decisions are made.

The GOV.UK guidance covers eligibility and how to apply. If farm infrastructure is on your list this autumn, it's a useful starting point.

Most livestock farmers start thinking about housing when the weather has already turned. By then, the choices are limited.

Space, ventilation, whether the bedding is going to stay dry, these aren't complicated questions. Most farmers know what they need. The harder part is finding the right building before the season catches up with you.

A building that's been struggling with damp air and wet bedding for years doesn't fix itself over summer. Getting it right while there's still room to plan makes a genuine difference come winter:
→ Better calf health and growth rates
→ Lower vet bills
→ Animals that go back out to grass in good shape

Last month, updated RSPCA Assured standards for beef cattle came into force. For farms on the scheme, the changes are already in effect.

The headline requirements cover pasture access, pain relief, animal handling and housing. On the housing side specifically:
→ Loose housing must be available as an alternative for cattle that won't use existing accommodation.
→ Calves must be grouped socially from one week old.
→ Environmental enrichment must be in place from three weeks of age.

What the updated standards do is sharpen the focus on what the housing environment actually provides for the animal:
→ Space to move freely.
→ Social interaction from an early age.
→ Conditions that support health rather than just shelter.

The Dorset County Show is this weekend in Dorchester. With over 175 years of harvest celebration, livestock classes, heavy horses and some of the best local food you'll find at any county show in England.

It comes at a real turning point in the farming year, the harvest is wrapping up, and animals are starting to come back in.

September feels different to August on a livestock farm. The days are shortening, and farmers who've been managing cattle and sheep at grass all summer start thinking differently about what comes next.

The decisions made about housing in September and October are the ones that matter come January.

Next weekend is show weekend.

The Edenbridge and Oxted Show has been running for over 180 years on the August Bank Holiday weekend. Kent, Surrey and Sussex farming families, two days of livestock, horses, food and countryside. Up in Scotland, the Lochaber Show sits under Ben Nevis. There are dozens more across England and Wales throughout the weekend.

The shows are a chance to step back, see neighbours, and remember why the work is worth doing.

Most farmers start thinking about Autumn housing in October, and by then the options have thinned out.

Permanent buildings take 12 to 16 weeks from order to installation, and planning permission adds more time on top. August is when there's still room to make a proper decision:
→ Animals aren't in yet
→ Time to assess what you actually need
→ Order and install before the season starts

Farms that get housing sorted in August go into Autumn in a good position. Modular farm buildings held in stock can be on site and operational within four days of an order. No permanent foundations with no planning permission needed in most cases.

The NSA Sheep Event at Malvern a couple of weeks ago covered the things it always does, genetics, flock health, and margin pressure.

One thing that rarely gets the same focus is housing.

Most flock performance reviews focus on the same inputs:
- Breeding decisions
- Worming programmes
- Nutrition
- Vet costs

All of it matters, and the buildings deserve the same attention.

A lot of UK sheep housing was built for a different era. Different cost environment, different compliance picture, different expectations around welfare. It does the job it was designed to do. The question is whether that job is still the same one.

Ram sales and scanning are already on the calendar for most sheep farms. The farms that include their buildings in that autumn review tend to find more room to improve than they expected.

Many UK farm buildings were designed for a cooler climate. Low eaves, dark interiors, limited airflow. In a typical UK summer, that's manageable. In a heatwave, it's not.

Research from the University of Reading found that housed dairy cattle in conventional buildings experienced heat stress conditions for 72% of milking time during the 2021 heatwave. With the UK seeing another prolonged warm spell this summer, the same conditions apply. The building itself was the problem then, and it still is.

In housed livestock, heat stress hits feed intake and milk yield first. Reproduction suffers next. In severe cases, it raises mortality. The effects on beef cattle and sheep are harder to spot quickly. Weight gain slows, but you don't see it until the next weigh-in.

If animals are coming in from the field into a building that can't move air, the housing is making it worse.
