Powering 100+ sites for one of the UK's largest independent co-operatives ☀️

We're proud to share the results of our multi-site solar rollout with Central Co-operative (CEC), one of the UK's largest independent co-operative retailers, operating food stores, funeral services and travel agencies across the Midlands, East Anglia and the North West.

As a member-owned organisation with sustainability at its core, Central Co-op set out on an ambitious mission: reduce its carbon footprint at scale, across a hugely varied estate, from historic high street stores to modern retail parks.

Sol PV Group was appointed as their solar partner to deliver the full programme, 2022–2025.

The challenge:
Rolling out solar across 100+ trading locations meant navigating multiple DNO grid connections, working around live store operations, and adapting designs to a wide range of roof types and building ages, all while keeping quality and specification consistent estate-wide.

Our approach:
We built a standardised-yet-flexible design methodology, managing the entire programme in-house, feasibility surveys, grid applications, installation, commissioning and ongoing monitoring, working closely with Central Co-op's property and facilities teams to minimise disruption to staff and customers.

The results:
📍 106+ sites
⚡ 5.46 MWp total installed capacity
🔋 4,900 MWh generated annually
🌍 1,230 tonnes of CO₂ offset per year
🗺️ 3 regions across the UK

This programme is a great example of what's possible when standardisation meets flexibility, delivering consistent quality at scale while protecting a much-loved retailer against rising energy costs and reinforcing its ethical, community-first reputation.

🔥 When it comes to solar, safety should never be an afterthought.

One of the things we’re often asked about is fire safety, and it’s a question we’re always happy to answer.

That’s why, where appropriate, we recommend ARC Boxes as an additional layer of protection on our installations.

They’re designed to detect electrical arcing and help interrupt the circuit if an arc is detected, adding another safety measure to your system. 🛡️

Because installing solar isn’t just about generating more energy or saving money.

It’s about doing the job properly, using the right equipment, and giving you peace of mind for the years ahead.

☀️ Safe
⚡️ Reliable
🛡️ Installed with protection in mind

Have questions about fire safety and your solar installation? Drop us a message.

We’re happy to talk you through it.

How much energy does 27 kWp actually mean? ☀️

We wanted to make solar energy a little easier to understand.

So, in this series, we’re taking the 27 kWp solar system we installed at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and putting its energy generation into real-life equivalents, things we can all picture and understand.

Because saying “27 kWp” doesn’t always mean much on its own.

But saying “that’s enough energy to…” makes it a whole lot easier to see what solar can actually do.

Real system. Real energy. Real-life comparisons.

Follow the series to see what 27 kWp really looks like. ⚡☀️

One year of solar at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. ☀️

Last year, we installed a 27 kWp solar PV system at Unit 5, designed to help Yorkshire Sculpture Park generate more of its own renewable electricity and reduce its reliance on the grid.

12 months on, the results are in:

⚡ 27.58 MWh generated
📊 94.7% of the original generation forecast achieved
💷 ~£5,800 estimated value of on-site solar energy in Year 1*

What started as a solar assessment is now 12 months of real-world performance data from a working commercial site.

A great example of what happens when you combine the right building, the right system and a year of Yorkshire weather

☀️ So, what does 6.36 kWp actually look like?

In simple terms, it’s a substantial solar system designed to generate energy for the local cricket and bowling club.

But rather than throwing numbers at you, we thought we’d show you exactly what 6.36 kWp looks like on a real installation. 👀

Swipe through to see it for yourself 👉

And if you’re wondering “how much solar can help me?”, get in touch and we’ll work it out for you.

⚡ Energy generated on your roof.
💷 Less reliance on the grid.

30/09/2026

We monitored one solar system at Yorkshire Sculpture Park through the UK's most extreme weather of 2026. During this period our customer experienced the coldest day in over a decade, and the hottest day of the year.

6 Jan: -12.5°C → 11.2 kWh generated
13 Aug: 38.1°C → 134 kWh generated

A 12x swing in output. But across the full year?
‼️27.58 MWh generated
‼️94.7% of forecast
‼️roughly £5,800 saved on electricity.

Output varies. It doesn't stop.

So... you don't want to save on your electricity bills?

One year of solar at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. ☀️

A year ago, we installed a 27 kWp SolarEdge system on Unit 5 at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

So, what happens when you leave a solar system to do its thing for 12 months?

27.6 MWh of electricity generated.

That’s 27,575 kWh of renewable energy produced on site over its first year.

The original design forecast 29.11 MWh, meaning the system achieved 94.7% of its predicted annual generation.

And financially?

Based on the electricity rate and expected on-site usage from the original assessment, the first year represents an estimated ~£5,800 of electricity value, before taking export income into account.

But for us, the best part is that this isn't a prediction anymore.

It's real data from a real commercial site, after a full year of operation.

One year down.
