Did you know? Emergency door release buttons are for emergencies only! 🚨🚪

This week, our team responded to another "insecure door" callout—a scenario we see all too often.

The culprit? Residents or guests pressing the Emergency Door Release panel or breaking the glass instead of using the standard exit button.

Here’s why that’s a problem:
⚡ Hitting the emergency release cuts off all power to the communal doors.
🔓 This leaves the doors unlocked, creating a serious security risk for the entire building.

Luckily, our team arrived quickly, reset the power and panel, and thoroughly tested the standard "Push to Exit" switch to make sure the building was fully secure again.

🚨 CRIMINAL DAMAGE. INSECURE COMMUNAL DOOR. WE WERE ON OUR WAY. 🚨

This week we were called to a very badly damaged communal door after youths had caused criminal damage to gain entry to the building.

With the main entrance left insecure, this was a priority. 🔐

We were on site in just over an hour and got straight to work.

On the RIGHT is the damaged lock case that had been forced and destroyed.

On the LEFT is the brand-new replacement lock case.

💡 Why does this matter?
We carry a wide range of locks and parts in stock on the van, meaning we can often repair problems immediately rather than having to order parts and return another day.

🔑 BUT WE DIDN'T STOP THERE...

Because a completely new lock was required, all the residents in the block needed new keys.

Luckily, our van is equipped with on-board key cutting equipment, so we were able to cut every resident's keys while we were on site.

And importantly, we could test every single key in the new lock before handing it over. 🔑✅

One visit.
One repair.
New keys for the residents.
Entrance secured.

Ever caught yourself staring at home insurance forms thinking, "Wait... what kind of lock do I actually have?" 🔑😅

We got a call this week from a returning customer stuck on that exact question. Her form threw two options at her:

• Lock conforming to BS3621 (showing the BSI Kitemark)

• Multi-Point Locking System

She had recently hired us to install BSI 3* cylinders on her doors, which also carry that same Kitemark symbol…just with a different number (not stamped) - so the confusion was totally understandable!

Here is the quick breakdown to save you the headache:

• BS3621 Mortice Locks: Insurance companies mean traditional mortice locks cut into the door. You’ll usually spot these on timber or wooden doors.

• Multi-Point Locking Systems: This refers to multiple bolts or hooks extending out from the side of the door when you turn the key/handle (usually 3+ locking points). You’ll typically find these on uPVC or composite doors.

In her case? She had a multi-point system upgraded with BSI 3* high-security cylinders for maximum protection.
Form filled, job done!

Ever seen a door lock held together by electrical tape? 🚪⚡

We were recently called out to help a lovely couple whose front door mechanism had completely failed. Once we removed the gearbox, we found the previous "locksmith" had secured it with bright blue electrical tape!

The back of the mechanism had blown out, screws were missing, and sticky tape was the only thing holding it together.
Definitely NOT something we recommend - short term or long term.

How we fixed it:

= Installed a brand-new, correct replacement gearbox
= Realigned the door to prevent future strain
= Fully lubricated all moving parts (zero tape involved!)

🔑 WE'RE MORE THAN JUST LOCKS! 🪟

We’ve been inundated with calls this week from people who have windows that simply won’t open — and this one really highlighted why it’s worth getting it sorted!

Our caller had been living in his 1-bedroom apartment throughout the summer without being able to open his window. 😳

Within just a few minutes of arriving, we diagnosed the problem as a failed handle lock, got the window open and replaced the faulty handle with a brand-new keyed handle. 🔧🔑

It’s a good reminder that JG Locksmiths are about more than just doors and locks.

Is your front door playing up with this warm weather? ☀️🌡️

When temperatures soar, PVC and composite doors expand, causing them to warp and misalign. If you are having to force the handle up or yank the door shut, stop pushing it!

Operating a misaligned door puts extreme strain on the internal multi-point locking system. Over time, forcing a sticky handle will strip the internal mechanism, leading to a completely failed gearbox and an expensive full lock replacement.

Signs Your Door Is Warping in the Heat:

1. The handle feels stiff or heavy when lifting to lock.

2. You have to push, pull, or lift the door leaf to get it to latch.

3. The key feels unusually hard to turn in the cylinder.

4. You notice drafts, light, or gaps around the frame edges.

You often don't need a costly brand-new lock or door. A quick adjustment to the frame hinges/keeps will bring your door right back into smooth alignment, saving your gearbox from snapping.

Bit of a "thank you" post this week! 🙌

Firstly, thank you to Tom Bird for pointing out the fact that my work kit was looking more grey than its true colour of black... 😂

Secondly (and most importantly), thank you to The Printers who were able to put together a nice summer bundle for me, expertly stitching the JG Locksmiths logo onto everything - including an Under Armour cap (capable of fitting my fat head!).

From beginning to end, the process was quick and seamless! ⚡

Amazing how a new bit of stash can make you look like a brand-new person! 🔥
