LONGFRAMLINGTON GARDENS
GARDENS & ARBORETUM : NURSERY & PLANT SALES AREA : GARDEN DESIGN & ADVICE

The Gardens & Arboretum are wildlife friendly by design, with habitats using the gardens varying conditions and microclimates, plant species, low intervention zones, no insecticides or fungicides, and tolerant garden management – all allowing biodiversity to flourish.
With the concept of creating / allowing wildlife corridors, the informal ‘wild’ areas wrap around the whole garden. The plant collection includes both native and ornamental species - ‘Food for the soul’ and interest for the gardens human visitors too!
Throughout, there are opportunities for cover, nesting, and food sources – the latter including seeds, berries, fruits, nectar and vegetation – not to mention the earthworms, insects and small animals that are part of the diet for ie. hedgehogs, swallows and owls.

The main integrated habitats include:
Meadow areas – mixed grasses, wild flora species and specimen trees. Meandering mown grass paths give great visitor viewing and access.
Outgrown hedge – giving cover shelter nesting and food sources.
Bog area – a naturally wet area
Oak trees – the native tree that supports most fauna species.
Plants - At last count, over 160 different ‘wild’ plant species throughout the gardens, including trees, shrubs, perennials, grass, sedge and rushes species.

Many types of birds are seen, and heard – Some visitors use an identification app on their phones! There are many species of insects - butterflies and moths, also dragonflies at the ponds.

Please contact Longframlington Gardens if you would like any further information.

We have many visitors, from all over the country, and abroad. Many bring their bird identification apps! We are happy for visitors to bring their dogs ( if kept on leads ), and for visitors to bring a picnic with them ( picnic tables are available ).

As ‘local’ people, would any of you be interested in an early ( 8am ) or evening (7pm ) bird appreciation visit? Say Wednesdays &/or Saturdays, through July & August? ( pre-booked only ).
Email me: info@ longframlingtongardens.co.uk
You can appreciate the plants at the same time of course! But you would have to bring your own smart phone + bird app.

Fragrance in the Gardens & Arboretum at Longframlington Gardens
Highlighting just 5 fragrant flowering shrub genus!
Philadelphus coronarius and Philadelphus lemoinii – Mock Orange. Planted here as ‘ambience’ plants in several locations in the gardens.
Rosa ‘Aloha’ – planted at the walk entrance, a lovely fragrant semi-double pink climber ( …. Aloha means hello and goodbye in polynesian!! )
Rosa rugosa and its many cultivars – a good stalwart shrub rose that will suit most situations. ‘Roserie de l’Hay’ a double dark pink form, is planted at the main entrance gate, wonderful as you drive in with the windows open.
Sambucus nigre ‘Black Beauty’ – Black Elder. A purple leafed form, with heady perfumed pink flower heads ( which you can also use to make pink elderflower cordial ) .
Buddleia davidii – the Butterfly Bush. The honey sweet fragrance is attractive to us and as the name says, to Butterflies. Buddleia ‘Dartmoor’ is an impressive large purple flowering form.
