Ever noticed the end of your tape measure wiggles about? 📏 Turns out that's not a fault, it's there on purpose.

In this one, we show why that little bit of movement matters. It's what lets your tape give a true reading whether you're hooking it over an edge or pushing it up against something for an inside measurement. Simple bit of engineering, but genuinely useful once you know why it's there.

Here's the catch though: that trick only works from an edge. Measuring from a line marked on a piece of timber is a different job altogether, and needs a different approach.

Three days ago this was a pile of pine and a curious group of students. By Monday afternoon, four finished units, cut with power tools, joined and fitted by hand.

This was our 3-Day Power Tools course this weekend in Moretonhampstead: mitre saw, router, pocket hole jig, jig saw, orbital sander, explained properly, one tool at a time, practiced, until it stopped feeling unfamiliar.

What stays with us isn't really the finished piece. It's watching someone go from "I'll just watch for this bit" or "I don't think I will end up with a finished piece" to squaring up their own cut without checking over their shoulder.

So proud of this group. Well done, everyone. 🪵

Yes I had a leak in the workshop! Luckily I have learnt enough plumbing skills to deal with it myself.
AND luckily I have Maria teaching our DIY Plumbing Intensive!
Maria is a qualified plumber and I'm sure this wouldn't have happened to her!
You just can't trust these carpenters with the plumbing...😅🪚🛠️💦

That's why all of our courses are taught by qualified Tradeswomen who earn their living working in the relevant trades.

That's why I don't teach the Plumbing course, and why Maria doesn't teach our carpentry courses.
