With deep regret we sadly report the passing of our company founder and mentor, Seamus Marshall after a short illness.

Ever present in the company for almost 40 years, his wisdom, advice and not least of all his friendly banter will be sorely missed by all.

The Marshall family will be forever grateful to the doctors and nurses within the local community, and especially in the MacMillan Unit in Antrim Area Hospital, for all their help.

Stronghold offices will be closed on Wednesday 30th August for the funeral.

Stronghold’s Highly Commended Award, in the Project of the Year category at the recent PCA Best Practice Awards, represents the first time a project in Ireland has been recognised at these awards. Stronghold were up against 15 other great projects and some very experienced companies from across England, Scotland & Wales, and so this represents a major achievement for the company.

The Tropical Fruit Warehouse, Dublin, which now houses TikTok Ireland, is a multi-award-winning project, that has a rich history dating from 1890, and which includes the honour of being U2’s headquarters from the early 1980s. The existing historic building has been supplemented with modern glass fronted offices, and a floating glass box above the warehouse.

Stronghold were tasked to completely refurbish the 30nr, historic, 14m span, Scot’s Pine, Queen Post trusses, which involved craning the trusses off the roof and onto a lorry, to be transported to their warehouse in Magherafelt. There, testing and analysis of the trusses was carried out, using an innovative, non-disruptive, Dynamic Testing Methodology, involving imparting a vibration into the trusses, and recording any movement using accelerometers to create a structural model. This provided actual, verifiable load data, rather than theoretical loads, for which Stronghold won an Innovation Award, at the 2022 PCA Best Practice Awards. Stronghold also successfully carried out sympathetic cleaning, repairs and painting of the trusses, returning them to site to be the centrepiece of the historic warehouse building.

This was the first time that the process had been used on historic trusses, resulting in significant cost savings along with providing the design team with confidence that the trusses performed structurally, and were reinstated in near original condition, in line with conservation best practice.

Have a look at the video link below of the trusses being removed, and being repaired and tested in our warehouse.

Last week Terry O'Neill received the prestigious, Highly Commended, Employee of the Year Award at the UK and Ireland wide, Property Care Association, Best Practice Awards.

As many of you may know Terry is very active in the local community, and often goes above and beyond what is expected, being chairman of Moneymore GAA club and on the board of governors for St Patrick's Primary School, Moneymore.

He has also many times went over and above in his roles at Stronghold, starting on site almost 13 years ago, progressing through various roles from estimator to his current role as a senior surveyor, passing damp & timber surveying exams with ease and gaining Chartered Construction Manager status.

Terry was selected for this award for his exceptional ability to be calm and unfazed, exceeding client expectations, whilst motivating his team to produce the highest quality and meet deadlines, even when handling the most complex projects, such as the Truss Refurbishment on the multi award winning Tropical Fruit Warehouse project.

Well done Terry!

Always a great way to end the work year with a day out at Foymore Lodge and a some friendly, competitive clay pigeon shooting. Well done to Pius Diamond coming 1st with an incredible 15 out of 16 clays and David Stanford winning the shootout for 2nd. The wooden spoon was graciously accepted, not for the first time, by Terry O'Neill

If you're looking for some great banter and first class instruction in the art of clay pigeon shooting we can't say enough good things about Derek Lutton

It was then on to District 45 in Magherafelt for an excellent Christmas Dinner, not before having a bit of craic with our staff raffle, with the top prize of a TV going to David Stanford.
