Sometimes the oldest methods are still some of the best!

Here at Finesse Masonry, we're using traditional Lewis pins to lift and manoeuvre a seriously heavy piece of stonework.

For those who haven't come across them before, Lewis pins are a traditional stonemason's lifting tool that fits into a specially prepared hole in the stone. Once correctly positioned, the lifting mechanism locks into place, allowing heavy blocks of stone to be safely lifted using suitable lifting equipment.

It's a clever piece of engineering that's been used by stonemasons for centuries, long before modern lifting clamps and machinery came along.

There's something satisfying about combining centuries-old craftsmanship with modern equipment to get the job done.

🏛️ Traditional Stonework for a Beautiful New Build

Another delivery of bespoke natural stonework, carefully crafted and supplied by Finesse Masonry for a stunning new-build property.

This project includes several traditional stone mullion windows, along with a large feature bay window designed to create an elegant focal point at the front of the property.

Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern construction, each piece has been individually produced to complement the architecture and character of the building.

Timeless design, natural materials and quality craftsmanship.

🚗💥 When a Car Decides to Pick a Fight with a Sandstone Gatepost! 🧱🔨

Unfortunately for the gatepost, the car won the first round! 😂

This beautiful old red sandstone gatepost recently had an unexpected encounter with a vehicle, leaving it with some rather unwanted modifications!

Fortunately, Finesse Masonry has been called in to put things right.

Our mission, should we choose to accept it (and we have!), is to carefully dismantle the original gatepost, remove the damaged stone base and handcraft a new section to match the original sandstone.

Once the replacement stone is ready, we'll carefully rebuild the gatepost, ensuring everything is correctly aligned, secured and restored to its former glory.

🛠️ The plan is simple:

- Carefully dismantle and preserve the original stonework.
- Remove the damaged sandstone base.
- Handcraft a replacement to match the original.
- Reassemble and reinstate the gatepost.
- Leave it looking as though the accident never happened!

No filler, no bodges, no shortcuts. Just proper traditional stonemasonry.

The ultimate goal? Make the repair so seamless that even the driver won't recognise where they hit it! 😂

🔥 Welding a Little Bit of Hollywood Back Together! 🎬

A behind-the-scenes look at the reinstatement of the original iron railings at the historic Liverpool School of Arts, following their temporary removal for a Hollywood film production.

After spending a week in secure storage at our premises while filming took place, we returned to carefully weld the railings back into their original positions.

Working around historic stonework requires precision and care, particularly when cutting and welding metalwork that's been in place for generations.

Once the welding was completed, the railings were repainted, the surrounding stonework repointed and everything restored to its original appearance.

The best restoration work is often the work you'd never know had been carried out!

🎬 A Little Bit of Hollywood in Liverpool! 🎥

We've recently had the pleasure of working alongside a film production company on a new Hollywood movie being filmed in and around Liverpool.

Finesse Masonry was approached to undertake specialist works at the historic Liverpool School of Arts, specifically the careful removal and reinstatement of sections of the original wrought iron railings.

Due to our extensive experience working with delicate and historic stonework, we were entrusted with ensuring the surrounding masonry remained completely protected throughout the process.

🔨 Our work involved:

- Carefully cutting and removing the existing railings without damaging the surrounding stonework.
- Transporting the railings to our premises for secure storage during filming.
- Returning a week later to weld the railings back into their original positions.
- Repainting the metalwork to match the existing finish.
- Repointing and making good the surrounding historic stone steps.

The objective was simple: leave absolutely no trace that the railings had ever been removed.

It's always a privilege to be trusted with specialist work on Liverpool's historic buildings, and even more exciting when there's a little Hollywood magic involved!

Limestone Clad Staircase – A Challenging One! 🔨
This limestone clad staircase was certainly one of those jobs that tested the patience and the tape measure!
With work like this, there’s very little room for error. Every tread, riser, return and joint has to be individually measured, cut and adjusted to work with the existing staircase. When you’re cladding an existing structure, you’re working with what’s already there — and unfortunately, existing buildings are rarely perfectly square, level or consistent.
A lot of time went into the setting out and preparation to make sure the finished staircase flowed correctly from top to bottom, with clean lines and consistent joints throughout.
Definitely a challenging project, but also the type of work we enjoy. Sometimes the jobs that fight you the most are the most satisfying when you finally stand back and look at the finished result.

♻️ Reusing Original Cheshire Red Sandstone ♻️
A slightly different job in the workshop today.
This old Cheshire Red sandstone gatepost has been carefully split down through its original bed so the stone can be reused on a Cheshire Red sandstone property.
Rather than simply discarding good old stone and replacing everything with new material, wherever possible we like to salvage and reuse original stone. Not only does it retain the character and history of the material, but aged Cheshire Red can be extremely difficult to replicate with newly quarried stone.
There’s always a little bit of satisfaction when a large piece splits cleanly along the bed — particularly when you know the stone is going straight back into another traditional building.

🌞 The holiday is nearly over... and it's back to reality!

We'll be back in the workshop and in full production from Monday, ready to get cracking on all of our current and upcoming projects.

Luna isn't impressed in the slightest. She'll have to swap her swimming costume for her high-vis and get back to work to help pay for the recent holiday! 🐶😂

Even while we've been away, we've kept on top of things. All emails have been responded to within a day or two, we're still booking new work in, organising stone with the quarries, and keeping projects moving ready for our return.

A big thank you to everyone for your patience while we've been away. We can't wait to get the dust flying again and bring your projects to life.

2,000 years on... and it's still doing its job.
Walking down the main street of Herculaneum in Italy is a real reminder of why stone has stood the test of time. These roads, kerbs and buildings have survived volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, weather, and the passing of countless generations.
As a stonemason, it's hard not to admire a material that can last for thousands of years when it's chosen correctly and worked properly. While many modern building materials have a relatively short lifespan, natural stone continues to prove why it's been trusted for centuries.
Whether it's a hand-carved fireplace, gateposts, steps or architectural masonry, you're not just buying something that looks good today—you're investing in something that could still be standing long after we're gone.
That's one of the reasons I enjoy working with stone so much. Every piece has the potential to become part of history.
