A private drive and garage court in Thame, Oxfordshire, with a fresh surface laid right back to the garages. We hand laid a 30mm overlay of 6mm TUFFdrive over the existing drive, which leaves a fine, even finish from the kerb to the garage doors.

A driveway in Corby, Northamptonshire, prepared and resurfaced for a main contractor on a residential refurbishment. It went back as an AC20 binder course with a 6mm SMA surface course over it, all laid by hand around the lawns, the block paving and the garage fronts.

There's a bend or two in it, which actually looks quite aesthetic.

Devon County Council has run its own materials laboratory since 1952. Part of its work is drilling cores out of new and existing roads to check the type of material, the depth of each layer and how well it was compacted.

It's good to see a county taking that much care over what sits under the surface, because the binder course and the compaction beneath it are most of what decides how long a road lasts. That's the part of the job we spend most of our time on, so this one caught our eye.

The access is usually the first thing built on a site and the last thing anyone talks about.

It is also the piece everything else has to cross. Deliveries, plant, concrete wagons, and eventually whoever ends up using the place. A tight radius or a poor tie-in to the existing road shows up in the first week, and it is an awkward thing to put right with a site running around it.

We build bellmouths, accesses and dropped kerbs onto the public road — excavation, kerbing and edgings, then surfaced and tied into the existing carriageway. For landowners, farms and businesses direct, or as subcontractor to the main contractor.

Same corner of the playground, one summer apart.

The old concrete had done its years — cracked, worn and past saving. It came out in full: dig-out, new kerbs and drainage, then asphalt hand-laid in two courses around the buildings and canopies at a primary school near Swaffham, Norfolk.

The netball and tennis lines are down, and the courts are ready before the first bell of term.

These school courts in Ampthill, Bedfordshire were resurfaced over the summer break — the old courts taken up and machine-laid in 6mm VIAcourt sports macadam — and the markings went down this week, applied by the specialists at F1 Lining Ltd.

Autumn is the season that quietly tests a surface.

Standing water works into small cracks, and the first frosts open them wider. Puddles are patient — they'll sit there all winter doing their bit of damage. Keeping the falls and drainage clear is what keeps a drive, road or car park sound through the wet months.
