Raised porcelain patio transformation complete.
This is one of those projects where the finished result looks clean and relatively simple, but there is a considerable amount of construction hidden underneath it.
The original area has been transformed into approximately 30m² of raised porcelain paving, creating a much more usable outdoor seating space alongside new fencing and a completely rebuilt supporting structure.
Because the garden drops away significantly behind the patio, the project had to be approached from the structure upwards rather than simply paving over the existing area.
We started by replacing the fencing, with the six concrete posts installed approximately 900mm–1m deep and incorporated into the supporting construction along the rear of the patio.
A reinforced concrete footing was then formed around the required perimeter before the retaining structure was built using 7.2N dense concrete blocks. The space between the blockwork and the concrete gravel boards was also filled with concrete, creating a substantial retained edge for the patio build-up.
Along the property, a separate 300mm concrete edging was installed approximately 100mm away from the brickwork.
Although the finished paving falls away from the property at approximately 1:60, we wanted additional protection around the building. DPM was introduced against the property and an 80mm perforated drainage pipe, wrapped in membrane, was installed within the perimeter channel to help manage any water reaching the area.
The patio was then built up using approximately 10 tonnes of MOT Type 1, compacted progressively in layers to establish the finished levels and provide a substantial base.
Around 30m² of Rough Bruno 600 × 900 × 20mm porcelain was then installed. The paving was carefully cut around the fence posts and extended beyond the fence line where required, allowing surface water to discharge away from the raised structure rather than being trapped behind it.
The installation was finished with Aspects Platinum grout, fully compacted into the joints, before the exposed retaining blockwork and step were clad in coordinating porcelain wall tiles.
The result is a completely new raised patio, new fencing and a much more practical outdoor space — while almost all of the work that makes it perform properly is now hidden underneath the finished surface.
A lot of work underneath. A clean, considered finish on top.
We filmed this project throughout the build, so the full transformation video will be coming soon.
