๐๐ฑ WHAT IS LAWN SCARIFYING, AND WHY SHOULD YOU DO IT? ๐ฑ๐
As we head into autumn, itโs the perfect time to start thinking about giving your lawn some much-needed TLC!
You might have heard of scarifying, but what exactly is it, and what are the benefits? ๐
๐ฟ WHAT IS SCARIFYING?
Scarifying is the process of removing the layer of dead grass, moss and other organic material (known as thatch) that builds up at the base of your lawn over time.
Using a rake, or a scarifying machine, we gently work through the grass to lift out this unwanted material, allowing your lawn to breathe and creating a healthier environment for new grass to grow.
๐ THE BENEFITS OF SCARIFYING
โ
Reduces moss and thatch โ Removes the build-up of unwanted material that can prevent your grass from growing properly.
โ
Improves airflow โ Helps air, water and nutrients reach the soil more effectively.
โ
Encourages healthier growth โ Creates better conditions for your existing grass to thrive and new grass seed to establish.
โ
Improves water and nutrient absorption โ Helps your lawn make better use of rainfall, watering and fertiliser.
โ
Prepares your lawn for overseeding โ Opens up the surface, giving new grass seed better contact with the soil and a greater opportunity to establish.
๐ WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SCARIFYING?
Donโt be alarmed if your lawn looks a little worse before it looks better!
Scarifying can leave your lawn looking thin, patchy or rough immediately afterwards. This is completely normal, particularly if there is a significant build-up of moss and thatch.
With the right aftercare, including overseeding where needed, suitable watering and fertilising at the appropriate stage, your lawn can recover and develop into a thicker, healthier-looking surface.

WHY AUTUMN?
Early autumn can provide ideal conditions for lawn renovation, with warmer soil temperatures and typically more rainfall helping new grass seed establish.
However, timing is important. Scarifying is best carried out when the lawn is actively growing and the conditions are suitable for recovery.
