Another round of quick questions, this time featuring Rob Lofthouse. A few short answers, a bit of life beyond the role, and one important thing we now know: it’s Monster Energy over tea or coffee.

Secure mental healthcare design has to consider more than security alone. At Rowan View, we worked closely with the contractor and architects to specify glazing across the medium-secure facility while supporting a modern, therapeutic environment.

The entrance, courtyards and walkways demonstrate how natural light and ventilation can remain part of the design conversation alongside safety and security, it is about looking at the environment as a whole.

Another phase of works completed at Yarm School. We’ve worked with the school before, helping to replace dated glazing with systems that support better ventilation, natural light and use of the spaces.

This latest phase is a smaller update, but still an important part of keeping the building working well for the people who use it every day. Thank you to Yarm School for continuing to trust the Polar team.

Our team has finished the installation of new windows at Blyth Hospital, supporting the ongoing improvement of the healthcare environment for staff, patients and visitors.

It’s always rewarding to see the finished result and another Polar project come together.

The phrase “anti-ligature” is often used in mental health design. But “reduced-ligature” is often the more accurate way to think about it. That is because risk can rarely be removed entirely from a built environment. What good design can do is help reduce potential risk points through careful specification, detailing, installation and maintenance.

That means looking beyond the obvious. Handles, frames, fixings, restrictors, glazing, ledges and openings all need to be considered as part of the wider environment. Reduced-ligature design is not about one feature. It is about how the whole space works together to support safer care.

We love getting to know more about the people behind the projects.

This time, Louise took the hot seat for a few quick questions, sharing a bit about work, life outside of Polar, and where she’d go if she could hop on a plane tomorrow.

Windows are not just a building feature in mental health environments.

They affect light, ventilation, privacy, observation, safety and how a space feels for the people using it. That means window design has to do more than meet a basic function, it has to support the needs of the setting.

In high-risk environments, the frame, glazing, fixings and overall detail have to be considered carefully. But so does the experience of the person in the room. Access to natural light and a sense of openness can make a real difference. The challenge is creating that without compromising safety, security or privacy.

The environment also needs to support dignity, privacy, recovery and care. If a space feels overly clinical, restrictive or institutional, it can affect how people experience that environment. That is the balance designers, contractors, estates teams and healthcare providers are working with every day.

· How do you reduce risk without removing comfort?
· How do you improve security without making a space feel closed in?
· How do you design something robust that still feels human?

We believe safer spaces should still be thoughtful spaces, because in mental health environments, the details matter.
