Our country has a rich history of glorious architecture, and we just love looking back and admiring the buildings of the past.

Did you know that during the medieval ages you’d find timber-framed buildings in areas with oak woodlands, such as the midlands, whereas stone buildings were common in regions which tend to experience harsh weather conditions, like northern England? 🏠

We had the pleasure of working on a proposal for a multi-purpose sports hall within Darlington’s West Park Academy.

The resulting scheme would deliver a glazed link corridor, providing covered access from the school, external finishes and materials designed to be as sympathetic to the existing school buildings as possible and external landscaping to successfully integrate the new sports hall into its surroundings.

We have just had planning approval granted for a garage conversion and rear extension to a property in New Marske. The application was submitted through the Planning Portal within 2 weeks of the survey and approval was granted by the local council within 6 weeks.

When it comes to building, extending or adapting your home, it can be tough to know where to start. As part of this week, we've compiled a list of top tips and advice to consider when it comes to working with an architect or designer and beginning construction...

🔹 Consider having an independent designer ensures that you get the works carried out that you want, not what the builder wants to build
🔹 Paying for designs to be carried out independently can actually save you money. Whilst the price of designs as part of an ‘all-in’ or ‘design and build’ package may look cheaper, you will have no control over the total cost of the works, whereas having designs carried out before you speak to builders means you can get more than one to price the job, ensuring you are getting a competitive price.
🔹 It's easier to move lines on paper than a brick wall! Having designs clearly laid out means you can get exactly what you want, before it's too late.
🔹 The Planning Approval and Building Regulations submission are becoming more complex, so ensure that you have someone competent checking that these are carried out correctly. These form legal documents and without the correct approvals you may be unable to sell your house in future or your insurance will be void.
🔹 Not all drawings are the same. Most prices for designs are based on how long the designer will spend on the drawings, and if you go cheap you will end up getting rushed, ill-thought out designs with generic construction notes, designs will set the tone how the works are carried out and your end result.

Meet the team...

Andy Harkin is our practice principal here at Harkin Associates.

Andy joined the company in 2006, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous role in a commercial capacity with a leading development company. His educational journey includes graduating from Teesside University with a Diploma in Business Studies, followed by earning a BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology from Northumbria University.

At Harkin Associates, Andy initially focused on enhancing the commercial facets of the family business, managing small works projects spanning various sectors, including Education, Commercial, and Retail. His notable accomplishments include overseeing roll-out concepts and re-branding initiatives for a high-profile high street convenience store and a renowned independent jeweller in the North East.

In his role, Andy has skilfully coordinated large-scale projects, a highlight being significant works at various Premier League football stadiums. His responsibilities encompassed overseeing the production information, tender, and construction processes, requiring seamless coordination with football clubs, contractors, the Premier League, and international broadcasters.
