It’s been a while since I’ve posted one of our projects, but here’s a before and after from one that’s been quite a slow process!
There’s actually been a lot more involved in this one than you might think from looking at the finished photos.
The original problem had been caused by a leaking lead valley at roof level, allowing water to pe*****te the building over a long period. With the stonework having previously been painted, that moisture had effectively become trapped behind the paint, causing considerable deterioration.
We stripped everything back, including shot blasting the old paint from the stonework, and restored the original stone detailing around the windows and front entrance. The property has then been finished using a two-part lime render system, allowing the building to breathe properly rather than trapping moisture within the walls.
At roof level, we rebuilt the parapet, replaced the problematic lead valley with a new GRP fibreglass gully and installed insulated roofing felt to improve the insulation internally. The non-original tiled roof has also been replaced with natural slate, and the coping stones replaced with stone matching the original, where previous repairs had used unsuitable replacements.
Unfortunately, the original stone banding across both the middle and the top of the building was severely damaged. The customer decided they didn’t want the banding reinstated, so it was removed completely. I’m still slightly undecided on losing that detail myself, but the customer is really happy with the finished result!
Hopefully, with the source of the water ingress now properly dealt with and a breathable lime system in place, this is a problem they won’t have to deal with again.
Quite a transformation, and nice to put some of the original character back into the property at the same time.
