⚡ Friday Electrical Tip: Signs Your Consumer Unit Might Need Upgrading
Your consumer unit (sometimes called the fuse board) is one of the most important safety devices in your home, but most people rarely look at it unless something trips.
Over the years, I've visited quite a few homes across Thanet where the electrics were still working, but the consumer unit was long past its best.
A few signs it may be worth getting checked include:
✅ You still have old rewireable fuses instead of modern circuit breakers
✅ Your consumer unit doesn't have RCD protection (the device designed to help protect against electric shock)
✅ Circuits trip regularly for no obvious reason
✅ You're planning a new kitchen, extension, EV charger or other major electrical work
✅ The fuse board is over 20 years old and has never been assessed
Now, having an older consumer unit doesn't automatically mean it's unsafe or needs replacing tomorrow. Many are still serviceable. However, electrical safety standards have improved significantly over the years, so it's worth knowing what you have.
A simple challenge for this weekend:
👉 Do you know where your consumer unit is?
👉 And when was the last time it was checked by an electrician?

Is One Socket Doing Too Much Work?
As the weather starts getting colder, many homes begin relying on a few extra electrical items:
🔸 Portable heaters
🔸 Tumble dryers
🔸 Electric blankets
🔸 Dehumidifiers
🔸 Air fryers
🔸 Slow cookers
On their own, most of these aren't a problem.
The issue is when several high-power appliances end up sharing the same extension lead.
I often visit homes where a single extension is quietly powering half a room. It might have worked perfectly well all summer, but winter can place a much greater demand on it.
A good question to ask yourself is:
"If I unplugged this extension lead, how much of the room would stop working?"
If the answer is "quite a lot", it might be worth taking a closer look at what's connected.
A few simple checks:
✅ Ensure extension leads aren't daisy-chained together
✅ Keep them fully uncoiled if they're on a cable reel
✅ Check for damage, overheating or discolouration
✅ Avoid plugging multiple high-power appliances into the same extension
✅ Make sure they're not hidden under rugs or carpets
Most electrical problems give little warning signs before they become serious issues. A warm plug, a strange smell, or an overloaded extension lead can often be spotted early.

Most Homeowners Haven't Pressed This Button In Years

One of the most common questions I get asked is:
"Why does my trip switch keep going off when nothing seems wrong?"
The truth is, your trip switch (RCD) is designed to protect you. It's doing its job by switching off the power when it detects a fault.
The challenge is finding what's causing it.
A few of the most common reasons I see in homes across Thanet are:
✅ A faulty appliance
✅ Water getting into an outdoor socket or garden equipment
✅ A problem with a light fitting
✅ An electrical fault that has slowly developed over time
A simple check you can try:
1. Unplug everything on the affected circuit.
2. Reset the trip switch.
3. Plug appliances back in one at a time.
4. If it trips when a particular appliance is connected, you've likely found the culprit.
What you shouldn't do is repeatedly force the switch back on without investigating the cause.
A trip switch is a bit like the warning lights on your car dashboard. It's usually telling you something needs attention.

⚡ Trevor's Friday Electrical Tip: Don't Ignore A Socket That's Warm To Touch
If you ever notice a plug socket becoming warm when appliances are being used, it's worth paying attention to.
A socket should only feel slightly warm under normal use. If it's noticeably hot, there could be:
✅ Loose connections behind the socket
✅ An overloaded circuit
✅ A damaged socket outlet
✅ A fault with the appliance plugged into it
I've attended several call-outs across Thanet where a customer ignored a warm socket for months because everything "still worked fine". Fortunately most were caught before any serious damage occurred.
A quick check you can do today:
🔹 Unplug any high-power appliances from the socket
🔹 Look for discolouration or scorch marks
🔹 Check if the problem happens with different appliances
🔹 If it continues, get it checked
Electrical faults often give warning signs before they become bigger problems.

You should NEVER, under any circumstances, attempt DIY electrical work in your home to save a few quid.

I see the aftermath of YouTube tutorials gone wrong every single week here in Thanet. A loose connection on a new socket might seem fine because the TV turns on, but it is a silent fire hazard waiting to happen behind your walls. You are gambling with your family's safety.

Stop viewing professional electricians as an expensive luxury and start viewing us as an insurance policy for your home and the people you love.

"My house was built in the 90s, so the wiring is perfectly modern and safe."

It makes sense to think this way, especially if everything still switches on fine and you haven't noticed any issues.

But here in Thanet, I see 25-year-old wiring daily that is degrading rapidly behind the plaster. Safety standards have changed massively since then, especially around consumer units and RCD protection. The truth is, wiring degrades over time, and modern homes use far more power than they did 30 years ago.

Think of your wiring like your car's MOT. It needs an EICR check every 10 years to ensure it is still safe for your family.
