The Right to Grow movement is making headlines – but what do you think?

Campaigns across the UK are calling for more opportunities for people to grow their own food by creating community gardens, orchards and new growing spaces.
At the National Allotment Society, we welcome anything that encourages more people to grow.

We also believe it's vital to protect statutory allotments – the only community growing spaces protected in law – giving plot holders the confidence to invest in their plots for the long term.

Could the answer be both? More community growing spaces and more protected allotments?

🌱 We’ve planted asparagus! 🌱

Today on plot 7 we planted out some asparagus crowns on the allotment — an exciting long-term addition to the plot!

Asparagus is a perennial crop, which means once it’s established, it’ll keep producing for many years to come with a bit of care and patience 👌

🧑‍🌾 How we planted it:

• Dug a deep trench
• Spaced the crowns out
• Carefully spread the roots
• Covered with soil and watered in

💡 Top tip:

Don’t harvest any spears in the first year — this helps the plants establish strong roots for better harvests in the future.

April is a busy month on the allotment — the soil is warming up and there’s plenty you can start sowing now!

Taking a bit of inspiration from Charles Dowding, here are some great options:

🥕 Carrots (direct sow)
🥬 Lettuce (little and often)
🌿 Beetroot
🧅 Spring onions
🥔 Potatoes (plant out)
🌱 Peas & broad beans
🌻 Sunflowers (for a bit of colour!)

💡 Tip: Sow little and often rather than everything at once — it keeps the harvest coming over a longer period.
