Check the fall before the pipe goes in, not after the backfill.

Drainage that looks fine in an open trench can still be flat, backfalling or sat on bedding that's been knocked about. Once it's covered, the only way to find out is a camera and a digger.

Get drainage falls right across Greater Manchester:

• Check invert levels at both ends of every run
• Level the bedding, not just the bottom of the trench
• Re-check after a heavy shower or plant tracking over it
• Note the levels on the sketch before anything gets covered

Wigan to Rochdale, Trafford to Tameside, a quick check on the run saves digging it back up.

What do you trust most for checking falls: laser, string line, or a level and rod?

Grid drift is quiet until it isn't.

On a longer job the first control you set can wander. Pegs get knocked, a temp station moves, and by the time you're setting steel or drainage you're working off something that no longer matches the drawing.

Keep control honest across Greater Manchester:

• Re-check your primary stations against the original survey
• Don't rely on one peg that sat in the dig zone for a week
• Re-establish before big setting-out runs, not after
• Write the date and who checked it on the sketch

From Stockport to Bolton, Salford to Oldham, a five-minute check saves a day of arguing about why the grid doesn't fit.

Do you re-check control mid-job, or only when something looks off?

Handy before you dig, before you build, or when you need a clear record of what's on the ground.

Message the page with the site address, what you need surveyed and when, and we'll let you know if we can cover it.

Before the steel turns up, check the holding-down bolts.

It's one of the easiest things to skip, and one of the dearest to get wrong. If a bolt group is off grid or a pad is high, you find out with the crane on site and the erectors stood waiting.

A quick check before er****on day:

• Measure each bolt group back to the grid lines
• Check the level on every pad
• Look at projection and spacing against the drawings
• Flag anything out early so it can be sorted

From Stockport to Bolton, Salford to Oldham, a bit of checking up front keeps er****on day moving.

Who checks the bolts on your jobs before the steel arrives: the groundworker, the steel erector or an engineer?

Your temporary benchmark is only as good as the last time you checked it.

On sites across Greater Manchester, from Stockport to Bolton, a knocked TBM can throw every level that follows. A few habits that help:
- Set it somewhere plant and deliveries can't clip it
- Close your level runs back on it every time
- Re-check it after a weekend or a wet week off site
- Set a second one so you can check one against the other

Where do you put your TBMs on a tight site?
