This week, we were pleased to welcome the The Oliver King Foundation to our Central Office to deliver defibrillator training to staff and members of our franchise network. 🙌

The session provided vital, hands-on guidance in how to respond confidently in an emergency, reinforcing the importance of preparedness and awareness in our workplaces and communities.

We are also proud to confirm the installation of two new defibrillators within our network at Rainbow Restoration Sheffield and Rainbow Restoration Stockport & Cheadle, further strengthening our commitment to safeguarding colleagues, customers and the public.

Our relationship with the Oliver King Foundation, led by Mark King OBE, reflects a shared commitment to increasing access to lifesaving equipment and training across the UK, and we are grateful for their continued support in helping us raise awareness of the importance of defibrillator provision. 💙

Maybe if I ignore the mould it will go away?

If you have discovered mould in your home or place of work, or in a property that you own it is in your interest to get the issue addressed. In the cases of employers or landlords you might even have a legal obligation to remove the mould due to the health implications. Mould is incredibly resilient so even once the root cause has been addressed the colonies which formed will still require removal.

For smaller colonies you might choose to do this yourself by wiping away the mould with a damp cloth and appropriate detergent. To keep safe you could choose to wear appropriate PPE and RPE, seal off unaffected areas of the building by closing doors and ventilating the affected area by opening a window. However, for peace of mind or for larger mould issues you will probably want to instruct a mould remediation specialist who safely remove the existing mould and prevent cross contamination to other areas. This can usually require specialist equipment and chemicals.

If you need any assistance with mould - identifying the cause or remediation - call Rainbow International Central Manchester on 0161 464 8014 or email [email protected]. 🌈

Why have I got mould?

If you have discovered mould in your home or place of work, or in a property that you own it is in your interest to get the issue addressed. In the cases of employers or landlords you might even have a legal obligation to remove the mould due to the health implications.

You might want to start with understanding why the mould has developed in the first place. Mould generally requires oxygen, food, moisture and temperature to flourish. Oxygen, food and temperature are usually reasonably stable within a property so the common catalyst for mould growth can be an increase in moisture. This could be due to condensation, penetrating or rising damp, ingress through a roof, a leak or a whole host of other causes. Mould can start to appear within a few days under the right conditions so acting quickly can help. Getting this fixed will prevent the mould returning once it has been treated.

Mould? So what?

In some cases mould colonies can look pretty impressive but in most it can be an eyesore. However, in all cases mould colonies can be a destructive and harmful addition to your property.

Mould breaks down and feeds upon the organic compounds that are found in many building materials such as plasterboard, carpets, wallpaper, insulation, wood etc. This can cause irreparable damage to structural elements and leave permanent staining.

Worse still are the health effects of high concentrations of mould spores or the mycotoxins that some moulds can produce. These can cause allergic reactions, respiratory infections and affect the immune system amongst others. In rare cases exposure can be deadly! Exposure over prolonged periods to even small amounts of mould can cause complications.

As a take home point mould in your property = bad. Find the cause then safely remove the mould to protect yourself and your property.

What's that? MOULD!

Mould is a term used for a type of fungal species, others being mushrooms and yeasts. Without using up all the character limit with fancy science jargon moulds grow in fluffy, colourful colonies which grow on decaying organic materials. They secrete enzymes onto the organic material and absorb the broken down material to use as energy and reproduce by producing spores which can be spread in the air or in water.

Mould spores generally exist in a dormant state in most indoor and outdoor environments without causing an issue. However, in the right conditions (moisture, temperature, oxygen and food source) colonies can form on various building materials which contain organic compounds causing damage to the building materials and presenting health hazards.

Stay tuned to learn more about the wonderful world of mould!
