🧐 If you’re thinking about uPVC windows, don’t look only at the price — here are 5 potential problems worth knowing about before you decide.

1. Heat loss in winter
Poorly performing frames, seals or installation can allow more heat to escape, meaning more energy is needed to keep your home warm.

2. Condensation, damp and mould
Cold areas around the window can encourage condensation. If moisture keeps returning, it can contribute to damp and mould around the frame and surrounding walls.

3. Movement with temperature changes
uPVC expands as it gets warmer and contracts as it cools. Over time, this movement can affect seals and how tightly the window closes, contributing to draughts and air leakage.

4. Frames can distort
Large or poorly supported uPVC windows can move or distort over time, which may cause problems with opening, closing and maintaining a good seal.

5. Plastic ages
White uPVC can gradually lose its original appearance, while coloured or foiled finishes may fade, discolour or deteriorate after years of exposure to sunlight and weather.

‼️ Before you replace your original timber windows with uPVC, here are 5 things worth considering.

✅ Follow us for more and find out how to safely replace the windows and doors in your home.

1. Excellent thermal performanceModern timber windows can be highly energy efficient, combining well-designed timber frames with modern double or triple glazing and effective seals.

2. Almost any colour you wantTimber can be factory-finished in virtually any RAL colour — including different colours inside and outside.

3. Built for the long termHigh-quality timber windows can last for decades. They can also be maintained, repaired and refinished rather than simply replaced when they start to age.

4. Traditional proportionsTimber makes it possible to recreate slimmer profiles, glazing bars and traditional details that suit period properties naturally.

5. Keep the character — improve the performanceYou can preserve the traditional appearance of your home while benefiting from modern glazing, effective seals, easier operation and improved comfort.

Timber windows aren’t just about looks.
They combine traditional character with modern performance, a long service life and far greater freedom of design.

Even a high-quality window may not perform as expected if it’s poorly installed. The quality of your windows matters — but how they are installed matters just as much.

1. EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR TYPE OF WINDOWS
Ask whether the company regularly installs the type of windows you’re buying. Installing timber windows, sash windows or windows in period properties requires the right experience and attention to detail.

2. HOW THE WINDOWS WILL BE FITTED AND SEALED
A window needs to be correctly positioned, securely fixed and properly sealed around the frame. Poor installation can lead to draughts, water ingress and problems with opening and closing.

3. LOOK AT THE FINISHED WORK
Don’t just look at the window itself. Ask to see previous installations. Frames should be straight, gaps should be even, sealant should be neat and the surrounding finish should look clean and professional.

4. WHO TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE COMPLETE JOB?
Ideally, the company supplying your windows should also take responsibility for the installation. If something isn’t right, you know exactly who to speak to.

5. CHECK THE QUALITY OF THE WINDOWS THEY INSTALL
A good installation can’t compensate for a poor-quality window. Ask what windows the company actually supplies — and look at the quality of the timber, glazing, hardware and finish.

Great windows and great installation should go together.

This project required six individual timber windows, carefully made to follow the curve of the original bay.

One of the most important details was the original stained glass. Rather than replacing it, we carefully transferred it from the old windows into the new timber frames — preserving an important part of the property’s character.

The new windows were factory spray-finished using a microporous coating system, designed to protect the timber while allowing moisture vapour to escape. With ⚪ white on the inside and ⚫ anthracite grey on the outside.

The result?
New high-performance timber windows, while keeping the original character and stained glass of the home.

🌡️❄️ Heat loss starts to matter from the very first heating season.

uPVC frames are made from hollow, multi-chamber plastic profiles. Timber, on the other hand, is a material with naturally good insulating properties.
In winter, you can often feel the difference simply by touching the frame. The colder the surface around the window and the poorer the seal, the more heat may be escaping from your home.
And greater heat loss can mean higher heating costs from the very beginning.

uPVC also expands and contracts more with changes in temperature. Over time, rubber seals can harden, shrink and lose flexibility.

The result? Draughts, cold air around the window and greater heat loss.
Seals can sometimes be replaced, but with older systems this may not always be straightforward or cost-effective.

The same applies to window hardware.
If fixing points in a uPVC profile become damaged, repairs can be more difficult. Timber usually offers much greater scope for localised repairs.

And that is one of timber’s biggest advantages.
A well-made timber window can be maintained, refinished and repaired over many decades.
uPVC windows typically have a service life of around 25 years, while good-quality timber windows can last 60–80 years or longer when properly maintained.

Timber can also be repainted, repaired and individual components can often be replaced without replacing the entire window.

So don’t look only at the price on the day you buy.

A cheaper window today does not always mean **a cheaper solution over the next 20, 40 or 60 years.

💬 Send us a message with the word “TIMBER” and we’ll help you compare the options and work out which solution makes the most sense for your property.

❌Quick. Cheap. Easy? But here’s the truth: once you rip out original timber windows, you can’t get the character back.

Here are 3 checks before replacing your windows:

Does the replacement material actually fit the age of your home?
PVC looks out of place in a Victorian terrace. Timber keeps the aesthetic intact.

Will it last more than 20 years?
Most PVC won’t. Properly made timber can last 60+ with simple care.

Does it add or subtract value?
The wrong choice can devalue your property. Heritage-appropriate joinery protects it.

If you care about your home’s beauty and value, stop thinking short term.
It’s not about “cheap and cheerful.”
It’s about timeless and durable.
