​The Prep: First rule of DIY—always protect your floors! We laid down protective film to keep the carpet safe before getting stuck in.

​The Progress: One section down and a few more to go! Sanding it all back to reveal that gorgeous natural wood underneath is so satisfying.

Rotten window frame? Resin could save it

Found soft, crumbling wood on a window sill or door frame? Before you write it off, ask about timber resin repair.

It's a way of restoring damaged wood without ripping out and replacing the whole frame. The rotten section gets cut back to solid timber, then rebuilt with a specialist resin filler that's shaped, sanded, and finished to match the original.

Done properly, it's just as strong as the wood it's replacing, and a lot less disruptive (and cheaper) than a full frame replacement.

It works well on sills, door frames, and other exterior timber that's taken a beating from the weather over the years.

Skirting, doors or stairs? Get the sheen right

Woodwork gets knocked about far more than walls, so the sheen level you pick actually matters.

Eggshell gives a soft, low-sheen finish. Nice on doors and skirting in quieter rooms, but it won't take heavy handling as well as the others.

Satinwood sits in the middle. It's more durable and wipeable, which makes it a solid choice for hallway skirting, banisters and anything kids or pets bump into daily.

Gloss is the toughest and easiest to wipe clean, with that classic reflective finish. Great for high-traffic areas, but it shows up surface imperfections, so prep work matters more.
