Summer can bring more than warmer weather. Increased storm activity, maintenance projects and changes to buildings can all affect the condition and effectiveness of a lightning protection system.

Temporary works such as scaffolding, rooftop equipment and short-term structures may alter the building or interfere with existing protection measures. At the same time, increased roof access by contractors can lead to accidental damage, unauthorised alterations or issues simply being overlooked.

Building upgrades also need consideration. New plant, solar installations, HVAC equipment and structural or electrical modifications can affect an existing lightning protection system if the protection measures aren't reviewed as part of the work.

The latest edition of BS EN IEC 62305 is now in place, with previous editions due to be withdrawn on 31 October 2027. But what does that actually mean for building owners and duty holders?

The simple answer is: don't panic.

A common misconception is that every existing lightning protection system must be upgraded straight away. That's not the case. In most situations, existing systems do not need to be altered simply because the standard has changed.

However, the opposite assumption can also be risky. If you're planning building alterations, a new development, or reviewing an existing system, the latest standard may need to be considered as part of the design or risk assessment.

Temporary works can create permanent lightning protection risks.

Scaffolding, roof repairs, temporary plant and new service installations can all interfere with an existing lightning protection system. Conductors may be disconnected, covered, moved or damaged, while additional metalwork can introduce new bonding and separation requirements.

The problem is that these changes are often made without anyone reviewing their impact on the wider system.

During the summer storm season, an unnoticed break in continuity could leave a building exposed when protection is needed most.

Lightning protection should be considered before temporary works begin, monitored while work is underway and inspected again before the project is signed off.��
