When a fault keeps coming back, you have to dig deeper.

This swim spa came in with a rather unusual problem: one of the jet motors had melted, and this wasn’t the first time it had happened.

The first thing we did was carry out a full check of the electrical system, testing everything we could. Surprisingly, all the electrics tested fine, and we couldn’t identify an obvious underlying fault.

So we replaced the jet motor, but as the spa is an American-made model, the pipework uses different-sized fittings to those we normally work with here in the UK. So, we had to source the correct fittings to connect everything properly.

Once that was sorted, we continued our investigation and found that a fuse in the main control panel had blown. Once the correct fuse was replaced, everything fired up and is now working perfectly.

Not exactly the kind of thing you'd usually call an electrician for, but it had a motor and a control system, so we were happy to take a look 😀.

A fire alarm upgrade to match the property's new chapter

We recently completed a fire alarm upgrade in an old Georgian-style property that had previously been converted into offices.

The customer has since purchased the property and is now converting it back into a residential home.

As part of the works, we:

▪️Replaced the existing smoke detectors with new ones

▪️Added two additional smoke detectors for improved coverage

▪️Installed a new fire alarm panel

▪️Removed the existing door holders and associated power supply panel, which were previously used to hold doors open for accessibility and automatically release them in the event of a fire. As these are no longer required following the property's conversion back to a home, they were removed at the client’s request.

Safe to say, this one caught our attention!

We came across this picture frame TV, which we installed recently, and I have to say, it’s a pretty cool bit of kit.

When it’s on, it’s a normal TV, but when it’s switched off, it looks like a piece of framed artwork, and displays a photo or a painting (rather than a big black screen).

Obviously, it’s turned off in the picture, but you get the idea!

You’ve got to love a clever gadget! 😄

Are your fire exits available in an emergency?

Fire exit doors are an escape route in the event of a fire. All doors on escape routes - including the final exit door - should be quick and easy to open and should not require a key to unlock.

When was your last electrical inspection?

According to new research from a national study by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), despite 79% of adults feeling confident about the electrical safety of their homes, only 30% have had their household electrics checked by a qualified electrician in the last 10 years.

Even more concerning, one in five people (20.1%) didn’t realise that these checks were needed at all. Yet electrical incidents remain one of the leading causes of accidental fires.
