The Season That Rewards Patience

There's a common misconception that October is when gardens begin to shut down for winter. In truth, they're simply changing pace.

The bright exuberance of summer gives way to something quieter. The low autumn sun catches ornamental grasses in a way it never does in July. Maples begin to glow with fiery reds and oranges. Seed heads stand proudly above fading borders, feeding birds and adding structure on frosty mornings.

It's one of the most beautiful times of year, if you know where to look.

For those of us who work in gardens every day, October is also one of the most productive months. The ground is still warm enough for roots to establish, rainfall is usually more reliable, and plants have months to settle before spring bursts into life.

It's why we often recommend carrying out larger planting projects now rather than waiting until next year. Trees, shrubs and hedging all benefit from getting their roots down before the growing season begins again.

I also encourage clients not to rush into tidying everything away. Leave some seed heads standing. Allow ornamental grasses to catch the morning frost. A garden doesn't have to be immaculate to be beautiful, and nature often rewards a little restraint.

Autumn reminds us that gardens aren't just about perfection. They're about change, character and the quiet confidence that another season will always follow.

A lovely garden transformation completed for a young family in Bearsted.

We installed a new porcelain patio, fencing, boundary hedging, a fresh lawn and new driveway edging, with the main aim of making the garden safer for the children and creating a proper space for family BBQs, summer evenings and having friends round.

The clients are really happy with the finished garden, which is always the best part for us.

Jobs like this are a good reminder that what we do is about far more than patios, lawns and fences. We get to create spaces that people can enjoy with their families for years to come, and it’s a great feeling knowing we’ve made a genuine difference to how they use their home.

Why September Is the Gardener's New Year

Most people think January is the time for fresh starts. Gardeners know better.

For me, September has always felt like the beginning of a new year. The frantic rush of spring has passed, summer has shown us what the garden is capable of, and now we have the opportunity to make thoughtful improvements while the conditions are still on our side.

The soil is warm from months of sunshine, nights are becoming cooler, and the first autumn rain often does much of the hard work for us. It's an ideal combination for planting trees, shrubs and hardy perennials.

This is also the month when I encourage people to stop looking only at what's flowering and start looking at the bones of the garden. As leaves begin to thin over the coming weeks, the structure becomes more obvious. Paths, patios, borders, fencing and the way different areas connect all come into sharper focus.

A well-designed garden should look good in every season, not just during those few glorious weeks in June.

Some of our most rewarding projects begin with a simple conversation in September. Clients have enjoyed their gardens throughout the summer and have a clear picture of what works and what doesn't. Perhaps they need a larger patio for family gatherings, better lighting for autumn evenings, or planting that offers colour long after summer flowers have faded.

The beauty of September is that there's still plenty of time to make those improvements before winter arrives.

A garden we’ve had the pleasure of looking after since 2009.

It’s quite hard to believe when you say it out loud. So much has changed over the years, both in this garden and within Cowen Landscapes, but one thing has always remained the same: our passion for plants, gardens and working outdoors.

One of the nicest things about looking after a garden for such a long time is watching it mature. Trees establish, borders develop, plants come and go, and the garden gradually evolves with the people who enjoy it.

There’s something particularly rewarding about knowing a garden through the seasons and being part of its story year after year.

The Garden Doesn't Stand Still, Even in August

August is often seen as the month when gardens simply tick along. Borders are full, the lawn has either bounced back from summer rain or is still feeling the strain of dry spells, and many of us are spending more time sitting in the garden than working in it.

But I've always found August to be one of the most important months of the gardening year.

It's when you begin to notice what has worked and, just as importantly, what hasn't. You can see which plants have earned their place and which have struggled. You notice where colour disappears too early, where borders have become overcrowded, or where a patio would benefit from a little more shade.

The best gardens evolve because someone is paying attention.

Many of our larger landscaping projects actually begin with conversations in August. Clients have spent the summer living with their gardens and suddenly have a much clearer idea of what they would like to improve before next year arrives.

Perhaps it's a seating area that never catches the evening sun. A border that needs more structure through winter. A tired fence that's beginning to show its age. These observations are invaluable because they're based on real experience rather than guesswork.

Whilst we don’t install a huge amount of timber decking these days, we were recently asked to breathe some life back into this tired, painted timber deck.

The good news was that the existing subframe was still structurally sound, so rather than recommending a complete replacement, we suggested making the most of what was already there.

We stripped back the old, flaking paint, prepared the timber and applied a clear decking oil to bring out the natural character of the wood. We then added the black highlights to give it a sharper, more contemporary finish.

The results speak for themselves, and at a fraction of the cost of replacing the entire deck.

One of the things I love most about this Japanese garden is the journey it takes you on.

Rather than revealing everything at once, its designed to be explored. As you wander along the winding paths, every turn draws your eye to something new. A carefully placed boulder, a specimen tree, a stone lantern, a bridge, or a perfectly framed view. Each feature has been positioned with purpose, creating moments of discovery throughout the garden.
