🕊️ 4 DAYS. ONE COMMERCIAL PREMISES. A WHOLE LOT OF PIGEON GUANO! 🧤🦺

Today marked the final day of a four-day commercial cleaning and disinfection project in Kent, with Phil working alongside Matt, owner of Kent Pest Management.

The team have been tackling a build-up of pigeon guano, carrying out specialist cleaning and disinfection to help make the affected areas safer and cleaner.

But pigeon droppings are far more than just an unpleasant mess…

⚠️ WHY IS PIGEON GUANO A PROBLEM?

🦠 Potential health risks – pigeon droppings can contain harmful microorganisms. Disturbing dried guano can release contaminated dust into the air, potentially exposing people to infections, including psittacosis.

🏢 Damage to buildings and equipment – droppings are acidic and can contribute to the deterioration of metalwork, stonework and other building surfaces.

⚠️ Slips and hazards – accumulated droppings can create slippery surfaces, putting staff, contractors and visitors at risk.

🐜 Pest problems – pigeon nesting material and roosting areas can harbour mites and other insects, creating further issues for commercial premises.

🌬️ Contamination around equipment – where guano builds up around ventilation systems, air-conditioning units, roof spaces or plant equipment, it can create additional concerns for maintenance teams and anyone working in those areas.

🛡️ WHY PROFESSIONAL CLEANING MATTERS

Simply sweeping up pigeon droppings isn’t enough — and doing so incorrectly can create airborne dust and increase exposure risks.

Significant accumulations need a properly assessed, controlled approach, using suitable protective equipment, safe removal methods and appropriate disinfection.

That’s why jobs like this require time, planning and the right expertise. Four days of work isn’t just about making an area look better; it’s about addressing contamination properly and helping protect the people who use and maintain the premises.

A huge thank you to Matt at Kent Pest Management for trusting Phil to assist on this project. It’s great to see local specialists collaborating to deliver the right outcome for customers. 🤝

🛏️ BED BUGS ARE ON THE RISE — BUT WOULD YOU KNOW THE SIGNS? 🛏️

Bed bugs are one of those pests nobody wants to find in their home… but they can happen to anyone.

And one important thing to remember:

❌ Bed bugs are NOT a sign of a dirty home.

They are expert hitchhikers and can be brought into a property on luggage, clothing, bags, bedding, furniture and other belongings. They can also spread between rooms and, in flats and other multi-occupancy buildings, potentially move between neighbouring properties. (British Pest Control Association)

🐜 WHAT DO BED BUGS LOOK LIKE?

Adult bed bugs are:

🔸 Around 4–6mm long
🔸 Flat and oval-shaped
🔸 Reddish-brown in colour
🔸 Similar in size to an apple seed

Young bed bugs (nymphs) are much smaller and can be extremely difficult to spot. (British Pest Control Association)

🔎 TELL-TALE SIGNS TO LOOK FOR

Don’t just look for the bugs themselves. Keep an eye out for:

🩸 Small blood spots on your sheets
⚫ Tiny dark/brown spots on your mattress, bed frame or furniture
🪶 Shed skins or pale eggs/eggshells
🪳 Live bugs around mattress seams, bed frames, headboards and nearby furniture
😣 Unexplained itchy bites, sometimes appearing in lines or groups

But bites alone don’t prove you have bed bugs — they can look similar to bites caused by other insects. Evidence around the sleeping area is important. (British Pest Control Association)

🚨 WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL A PROFESSIONAL?

If you’ve found a live bed bug, repeated unexplained signs, or you’re seeing evidence around your bed, don’t wait and hope they’ll disappear.

Bed bugs can be extremely difficult to control and DIY treatments can sometimes make the situation worse by disturbing and dispersing the infestation. (British Pest Control Association)

🛡️ HOW DO WE TREAT BED BUGS?

At Barnard Environmental, we use a professional treatment programme combining:

♨️ Steam treatment – targeted treatment of suitable harbourages, helping to tackle bed bugs and eggs.

🧪 Residual insecticide treatment – professionally applied to appropriate areas so that the treatment continues working after application.

🔄 Three visits – follow-up treatments are a crucial part of controlling an infestation because bed bugs have a life cycle that means newly emerged bugs may need to be dealt with after the initial treatment. Professional guidance recommends multiple visits as part of effective bed bug management. (British Pest Control Association)

We don’t just spray and walk away.

We inspect, treat, monitor and reassess across the treatment programme to give you the best opportunity of getting the infestation under control.

🛏️ THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE BED BUGS?

Don’t panic — and don’t start throwing your furniture out!

🏠 THIS IS WHY WE DON’T JUST GIVE A PRICE OVER THE PHONE

This is a recent kitchen we were asked to assess for hoarding clearance, rubbish removal and deep cleaning.

Looking at a photograph, it might be tempting to simply say, “That’ll take X hours.”

But that’s not how we quote.

Every property is different, and there can be a lot more involved than simply removing what’s visible.

When we assess a property, we look at:

🔹 The amount and type of items to be removed
🔹 What is actually rubbish and what needs to be retained
🔹 Access and removal logistics
🔹 Bulky or difficult-to-remove items
🔹 The condition of kitchens and bathrooms
🔹 Levels of contamination and soiling
🔹 Evidence of pests or rodent activity
🔹 Odours and hygiene concerns
🔹 Waste disposal requirements
🔹 How much cleaning and disinfection is likely to be required
🔹 How many technicians are needed
🔹 How long the work is realistically going to take

And sometimes photos simply aren’t enough.

For more involved properties, we recommend a site visit so we can properly assess the condition, risks, access and logistics before providing a quotation.

Why is getting the quote right so important?

Because this isn’t just about making a property look cleaner.

It’s about making it safer, more hygienic and more usable, while treating the person and their belongings with respect.

We don’t judge. We don’t make assumptions. And we don’t simply turn up and start throwing things away.

We work with the client, family members, landlords, housing providers, property managers and care organisations to establish what needs to be achieved and create a realistic plan.

From partial declutters through to significant property recovery projects, Barnard Environmental can help.

This little flea was filmed dying after its first professional flea treatment at a property in Maidstone. 👀

Fleas are a real problem for many of our clients, and they can cause a huge amount of distress, discomfort and frustration in the home. Finding fleas jumping around your carpets, furniture or even biting family members can be incredibly unsettling — especially when you feel like you can’t get rid of them.

And the tricky part? Fleas don’t just live on your pet.

Eggs, larvae and pupae can be hiding throughout the home, particularly in carpets, rugs, upholstery and cracks and crevices.

After the first treatment, you may still see some flea activity as immature stages continue to develop and emerge.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the treatment hasn’t worked.

🐾 Still finding fleas? Don’t suffer with them — get the problem professionally treated.

📞 BOOK YOUR FLEA TREATMENT TODAY

Send us a message or call 07814 730552 to arrange a professional flea treatment in Maidstone and across Kent.

We’ll explain how to prepare your property before treatment and what you need to do afterwards to help break the flea life cycle.

🐿️ Caught in the act!

We spotted this little troublemaker at a client’s property in Maidstone recently.

With autumn approaching, squirrels are becoming more active around roofs and loft spaces as they look for somewhere warm and sheltered.

This is a good reminder to keep an eye (and ear 👂) out for the signs:

🐿️ Squirrels regularly getting onto your roof
🔊 Scratching, running or gnawing noises in the loft
🪵 Freshly chewed timber or roofline materials
🏠 Gaps around fascias, tiles or roof edges
🧺 Disturbed insulation or nesting material
💩 Droppings or other signs of activity in the loft

⚠️ And remember — don’t try to deal with the problem yourself or block an entrance without professional advice. You don’t want to trap an animal inside, and there can be hazards in loft spaces including damaged electrical cables.

If you think you have an unwanted visitor making itself at home, get it checked before a small problem becomes an expensive one!

🐿️ This isn’t just a little hole in the roof…

This is what happens when squirrels decide your loft is the perfect place to move into.

Our client contacted us after squirrels had been causing ongoing problems at their property — and neighbouring properties too.

As you can see from the photo, they hadn’t simply found a way in… they had chewed through the timber to create their own entrance. 😳

Once squirrels gain access to a loft or roof space, they can cause significant damage, including chewing timber, insulation and electrical cables, as well as creating noise, mess and contamination.

And the tricky part? If you simply deal with the squirrels without addressing how they’re getting in, the problem can come straight back.

That’s where a proper inspection and proofing plan is important.

🐿️ Squirrels might look harmless, but they can cause some serious damage.

If you think squirrels are getting into your loft, don’t leave it until the damage gets worse.

While treating a wasp nest in Maidstone, this determined little visitor decided my PPE looked like a target! Thankfully, with the correct protective equipment, professional-grade products and the right training, it was all part of the job.

Wasp nests can become extremely aggressive when disturbed, and attempting to remove one without the proper equipment can quickly lead to multiple painful stings.

If you’ve spotted a wasp nest at your home or business, leave it to the professionals. We’ll deal with it safely, efficiently and with the right protection.

👋 We’ve been a little quiet on social media lately… but that’s because we’ve been busy doing what we do best!

Just because we haven’t been posting doesn’t mean we haven’t been hard at work.

Over the last week alone, the Barnard Environmental team has:

🐝 Safely treated 24 wasp nests
🐀 Attended 12 rodent call-outs
🤝 Secured 3 new commercial contracts, with new customers stretching from Sidcup to Folkestone

We did manage to take a well-earned break on Sunday to celebrate Phil’s birthday with a family BBQ. Anyone who knows Phil will know he’s the undisputed King of the BBQ! 🍔🔥 After a busy few weeks, it was great to spend some quality time with family before getting straight back to helping our customers.

A huge thank you to all of our customers—both new and existing—for your continued support. Your recommendations and trust help our family business continue to grow, and we genuinely appreciate every enquiry, booking and review.
