On Site in Hyde Park – Refurbishment Asbestos Survey

Our team of surveyors recently carried out a refurbishment asbestos survey within a boiler room located in Hyde Park, ensuring the space is safe and compliant ahead of planned works.

During the survey, the team uncovered something quite special, rather neat insulation on pipework originally installed by Medway Insulations many years ago, still clearly marked with our company stickers. A real blast from the past.

It’s always rewarding to see our legacy work standing the test of time.

Asbestos-Containing Artex Ceiling Safely Removed

We’ve recently completed the safe removal of asbestos-containing Artex ceilings at a domestic property that had just been purchased for renovation. Like many new homeowners, the clients wanted to update the space but first needed confidence that it was safe to do so.

Properties built or refurbished prior to the year 2000 can often contain asbestos materials, particularly decorative coatings such as Artex. For new homeowners, this often comes to light when planning refurbishments such as re plastering, rewiring, or layout changes.

Before renovation work began, a suitable assessment was carried out, and the material was identified and managed in full compliance with current UK health and safety regulations.

Our trained team completed the removal using controlled methods to ensure:
• Protection of occupants, trades, and neighbouring areas.
• Minimal disruption to the renovation schedule.
• Full adherence to HSE guidance and best practice.

The property is now clear, safe, and ready for the next stage of renovation, giving the owners confidence to move forward with their plans.

If you’ve recently bought an older property and are considering renovations, addressing potential asbestos materials early can help avoid delays, unexpected costs, and health risks later on.

🌍 Global Asbestos Awareness Week | 1–7 April

Global Asbestos Awareness Week is a timely reminder of the responsibility our industry carries in protecting people, workplaces, and communities from the ongoing risks of asbestos.

Despite being banned for decades, asbestos remains present in thousands of buildings. Awareness and early intervention remain key to preventing avoidable exposure and long term health consequences. Every day, our team step into environments where precision, caution, and compliance are critical. Their commitment to safety is reflected in the strict use of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Behind every compliant removal project are trained professionals applying rigorous controls, disciplined methodology, and a commitment to best practice.
Our operatives suit up every day with:
• Type 5/6 disposable coveralls
• Face fit tested respirators with P3 filters
• Disposable gloves
• Protective footwear / overshoes
• Strict decontamination routines

Every mask.
Every zipper.
Every filter.
It all matters.

Why? Because the right PPE and RPE don’t just protect our team from dangerous airborne fibres, they protect their families, our clients, and the communities we work in.

Asbestos Enclosures: The Critical Control Measure in Licensed Removal
During licensed asbestos removal works, the enclosure is not simply a physical barrier, it is the primary control measure that enables the work to be carried out safely, legally, and effectively.

A correctly designed and installed enclosure:

• Provides an airtight, fully sealed work area.
• Allows for negative pressure units (NPUs) to control airborne fibres.
• Prevents fibre migration beyond the work zone.
• Protects occupants, neighbouring trades, and the wider environment.

Within the enclosure, airflow is managed, entry and exit are controlled through airtight airlocks, and monitoring ensures fibre levels remain within safe limits throughout the works.
Asbestos fibres cannot be seen, smelled, or sensed, which is why containment must be engineered, tested, and maintained to the highest standard.

In licensed works, the enclosure is where compliance, competence, and care converge.
Because safe removal depends not only on what is removed, but on what is prevented from escaping.

🌍 Global Asbestos Awareness Week | 1–7 April

Informed decisions start with accurate surveying, at Medway Insulations Ltd our asbestos surveyors provide the essential evidence that underpins safe planning, legal compliance, and effective risk control. An asbestos surveyor plays a critical role in protecting people, properties, and projects.

Competence goes far beyond simply identifying materials, it’s about knowledge, training, and professional responsibility.

Essential Qualifications and Training of our Surveyors:
• BOHS P402 – Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings.
• Asbestos awareness and health and safety training.
• Experience working to UKAS-accredited procedures.

Before an asbestos surveyor assesses hidden risks within a building, they must first manage their own exposure. In line with HSG 264 Asbestos: The Survey Guide, appropriate PPE and RPE may include:
• Disposable Type 5 coveralls to prevent fibre contamination.
• Suitable RPE, selected through task based risk assessment and face fit testing.
• Disposable gloves and suitable footwear or overshoes.

Through structured inspection, targeted sampling, and material assessment, the surveyor identifies asbestos containing materials that are often concealed within the building fabric.

Using a professional, competent UKAS accredited asbestos surveying company ensures:
• Surveys are carried out fully in accordance with HSG 264.
• PPE and RPE are correctly selected, worn, and managed.
• Surveyors have the training, experience, and judgement to avoid unnecessary
disturbance.
• Findings are accurate, defensible, and suitable for downstream decision making.

A qualified asbestos surveyor helps ensure compliance, reduces risk, and supports informed decisions, protecting occupants, contractors, and businesses alike.

🌍 Global Asbestos Awareness Week | 1–7 April

As an accredited asbestos removal company, we continue to champion Global Asbestos Awareness Week as it’s a vital reminder that asbestos remains a real and ongoing risk across homes, workplaces, and public environments.

Every day, our teams see firsthand how hidden asbestos can put people at risk.

That’s why this week is so important, as It’s an opportunity to:
• Raise awareness about where asbestos may still be found.
• Educate property owners and businesses on their legal responsibilities.
• Promote safe, compliant removal practices carried out by trained professionals.
• Support individuals and families affected by asbestos-related illness.

Asbestos-related diseases are preventable, and awareness is the first step. Every year, individuals are still exposed to asbestos without realising it, often during routine refurbishment, maintenance, or demolition work.

Our team is fully accredited and committed to providing safe, compliant, and efficient asbestos survey and removal services.

Let’s work together to make asbestos exposure a thing of the past.
