We are repairing a water damaged electrical installation in a lovely country cottage that is being renovated.

Previously, rather than repair it, someone had turned it all off (a good choice) and then added a new consumer unit over the top and draped armour cable around the house to power fridges etc. (not a good choice).

We can see from the rust on the sockets that this did get very wet but it has dried out now and initial tests of the cables look fine. I may be wrong but I think we can save this one so new Consumer Units and lots of sockets facias will be going in. Stay tuned for an update...

I got a call out today from a local lady who had an overheated plug on her dryer. Please check yours, put your hand on your dryer plug after it has been on for 10 minutes, if it is hot to the touch then turn it off.

Sadly, a local lady has suffered an ECO 4 grant disaster at her home. She got free solar panels installed but has been left with a damaged roof and very substandard electrics. We are helping her contact MCS, Napit, HIES and building control to see what help there is for her to get her home repaired. We would welcome any additional advice.

She has tiles snapped on her roof, bits of tiles stuck on with silicone in place of damaged ones, missing tiles underneath the array, loose cables everywhere, non-compliant electrical work, no paperwork, no labelling or safety notices, the installation is a complete mess everywhere you look.

I will update this thread as a blog so everyone can follow. We will hopefully learn that the MCS standards are upheld and her home is taken care of.

It has been an exciting 6 months doing the training and getting into solar energy installs. This installation is 12kW of solar panels, a 10kW of battery storage and a EV charger.

We do repairs and upgrades as well as new installs. If you have a problem with your system or you just bought a house with PV and know nothing about it, we are always available for a chat.

We also do general electrical contracting.

An open Consumer Unit, no emergency lighting and fire detection in the communal staircases, no paperwork and this 'installation' was underneath the wooden stairs. What could go wrong?

2 days later and we still need to do a bit of tidying up on the cables but everything is now inside one Consumer Unit, with the top on, clearly labelled and with paperwork.

Never let it be said we don't love a challenge...

Another 1960's wooden chassis Wylex fuse board came to the end of its life. It was too late in the day to get a replacement so we fitted a new MK Consumer Unit the next morning.

It only smouldered on the wooden chassis but could have been a lot worse. These old boards may seem fine but you really need to get them checked.

A busy few weeks rewiring an empty industrial unit have come to an end and a shiny new MOT centre is here.

Check out the before and after pictures. The 1960's distribution boards, switchgear and wiring were all ripped out and replaced. There were some long days but I love the end result.

Another EV charger is installed on a park home in a beautiful secluded location with a limited mains electricity supply.

EV chargers can be installed just about anywhere these days and even mobile homes with only 32A supplies can have 7.2kW fast chargers.

Add solar and you can recharge your car for free...
