Open the doors and it's all just there, the coffee machine still plugged in, the mugs at eye level, the toaster that never had to be lifted onto the worktop, the jam, the good spoons, the cereal nobody admits to and then you close two doors, and none of it exists anymore, and the kitchen goes back to being calm, and nobody has to know what happened at 7am. 🤍

That's the whole point of a breakfast pantry: sockets inside, doors that fold flat, chaos with a lid on it.

Contemporary Shaker in two minutes. Same honest frame as the original, none of the fussiness, which is why it sits comfortably in a modern extension instead of fighting it.

Two rooflights and a sloping ceiling, and suddenly the back of the house has the best light in it. The pendants hang low on copper drops so the island stays lit at close range, the green is kept to the island alone, and everything around it stays pale to push the daylight further. Small decisions. You'll notice them most at four o'clock in December.

A pantry you can walk into changes everything, nothing hides at the back, nothing gets bought twice, and you can see the whole week's shopping in one glance. The trick is it was planned into the extension from the very start, not squeezed in later.

Storage should follow the light, not the walls.

The ceiling slopes here, so wall units were never an option at the bright end and that turned out to be the best thing about this kitchen. Everything bulky went to the back, in the darker half, where a full-height run costs you nothing. The front stayed open under the roof lights, with one dresser for tea and coffee. That's it.

Same amount of storage. Half the visual weight.

Kitchens fail when everything competes for the same surface. This one doesn't.

A sink is for the awkward things, the roasting tin, the baking sheet, the pan with a handle that won't sit at any angle. Which makes the second bowl a poor trade: it's rarely used, and it costs you the width where it matters most.

Specify the largest single bowl the run will take. It's a small decision that you'll notice every day for twenty years.

It draws natural light deep into the kitchen, brightening the worktop throughout the day while creating a visual connection to the outside. Even the everyday ritual of washing up feels lighter when there is something beyond the sink worth looking at.
