A moment worth marking. ⚡

In 2024, wind and solar overtook fossil fuels in the UK's electricity mix.

Just fifteen years ago, the UK was one of the most fossil fuel-dependent grids in Europe. Coal and gas dominated. Renewables were a footnote.

Today:
↗ Wind & solar: ~33% of UK electricity
↘ Fossil fuels: ~27–28%
✕ Coal: zero — the last plant closed September 2024, ending 142 years of coal power in Britain

The crossover you can see in this chart didn't happen by accident. It took sustained policy, falling technology costs, and nearly two decades of investment.

Challenges remain, gas still dominates on cold, still days, electricity prices stay too high, and the grid needs major upgrades to handle more renewables.

But the direction of travel is set. At Clearvolt, accelerating what comes next is exactly what we're here for.

Many businesses are being asked to reduce energy costs without reducing output.

When operations, production hours and equipment use are fixed, cutting demand isn’t always realistic.

That’s why more organisations are shifting focus from using less energy to changing where their electricity comes from.

This article explores how behind-the-meter renewable energy, designed around real consumption data, can reduce grid reliance, lower costs and improve predictability, without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Great Britain has already run on 100% clean power for 87 hours in 2025, according to Carbon Brief.

That’s around 1.3% of all hours so far this year, still a long way from where the system needs to be by 2030.

But it’s also a 50-fold increase from just 0.03% in 2021, and nearly double last year’s 0.7%.

That’s a genuine milestone, and a signal of how far the system has come.

But for large commercial and industrial sites, the more important question isn’t whether clean power is available. It’s how reliably it can be accessed, priced and delivered when sites are operating at full capacity.

These clean-power periods often occur when demand is low and renewable output is high.

Translating that progress into lower, more predictable energy costs for businesses still depends on how electricity is supplied, not just how it’s generated at a national level.

This is where the conversation moves beyond headlines and into system design, grid dependency, network constraints, non-commodity charges and the role of on-site generation.

As clean power increases on the grid, how are organisations ensuring they actually benefit from it commercially?

Climate change is showing up in different ways, hotter summers, heavier rainfall and more unpredictable weather.

We’re already seeing the impact across the UK, and it’s becoming part of the environment businesses now operate in.

At the same time, reporting expectations are shifting.

SECR is already in place, and the upcoming UK Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2) will require companies to show how climate risks affect their operations and report emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and, where relevant, Scope 3.

For organisations with high electricity demand, this puts real focus on the emissions tied to grid power, and what can be done to reduce them.

On-site renewables are a practical way to cut Scope 2 emissions and bring more stability to long-term energy costs.

Clearvolt develops and funds on-site solar systems so organisations can take that step without using capital.

If you’re reviewing your sustainability plans for 2026, is on-site generation part of the conversation?

Hydrogen comes in many colours, but only some point toward a genuinely low-carbon future.

Right now, green hydrogen is the one to watch.
Made using renewable electricity, it offers a near-zero-carbon option for sectors that can’t easily electrify, heavy transport, industrial heat, chemicals and more.

The challenge? Cost. Green hydrogen is still pricier than fossil-based alternatives, but improving electrolysers, cheaper renewables and new policy support are closing the gap.

It’s early days, but hydrogen could play a big role in how industry decarbonises over the next decade.

Climate change isn’t a distant environmental issue, it’s an operational one.

When extreme weather disrupts transport, supply chains or energy grids, the impact is immediate: higher costs, delayed projects, reduced productivity.
Every disruption eventually becomes an economic one.

Energy sits at the centre of that equation. It’s both where the risks start, and where real resilience begins.
As heatwaves, floods and storms become more frequent, reliable power isn’t just an environmental concern, it’s a business necessity.
The ability to generate and manage energy locally gives organisations more than sustainability credentials, it provides stability, predictability and control when the wider system becomes unpredictable.

Predictable, low-carbon energy is no longer just the ethical choice.
It’s the foundation for long-term continuity and competitiveness in a changing climate.

Renewables are reshaping the global energy system.

China now produces around a third of the world’s renewable electricity, the US about a quarter, and countries across Europe are accelerating fast as falling costs and storage advances make clean power commercially competitive.

This global scale has a local impact. As manufacturing and deployment of solar, wind and battery systems expand worldwide, technology improves and supply-chain efficiencies filter through, lowering delivered costs for UK projects and improving reliability.

For large energy users, that’s where global momentum meets practical opportunity. On-site generation now offers predictable, behind-the-meter savings that help stabilise energy costs and reduce exposure to market volatility.

Through long-term Power Purchase Agreements, these systems can be fully funded at zero CapEx, turning what used to be a capital decision into an operational one.

If you are interested, Clearvolt works with major UK manufacturers, estates and logistics operators to design, fund and operate renewable systems that make energy risk manageable and performance measurable.

We all talk about cutting energy costs.
But not enough about predictable ones.

Most “fixed” tariffs still rise with policy, fuel and network charges.
They look stable on paper, until the next renewal hits.

When your power is generated on-site, you remove most of those variables.
You know where it comes from, what it costs, and how it fits into your plans.

That consistency changes more than your bill.
It changes how you budget, price, and plan growth.

Predictable costs don’t just save money, they give you time, control, and fewer surprises along the way.

Renewables are scaling faster than any other energy technology in history.

Since 2010, global capacity has grown roughly 28% a year for solar, 14% for wind, and 68% for battery storage, momentum strong enough to start shifting fossil generation by the end of the decade.

That global growth now translates directly into what’s achievable on the ground in the UK.

On-site solar and wind now deliver predictable, behind-the-meter savings and resilience, funded entirely at zero CapEx through long-term PPAs.

It’s how large energy users are turning volatile energy costs into fixed, operational lines, improving control without tying up capital.

Clearvolt designs, funds, and operates on-site renewable systems for UK manufacturers and multi-site estates, taking projects from intent to operation end to end.

The global energy transition isn’t slowing down, it’s accelerating.

New data from Ember shows that in the first half of 2025, solar and wind generation grew by 403 TWh, comfortably outpacing the 369 TWh rise in global electricity demand. That means renewables met 109% of new demand, even driving a slight decline in fossil fuel generation.

This matters for every business watching energy costs climb. As clean power scales faster globally, on-site generation is becoming one of the most effective ways to cut exposure to grid costs and volatile non-commodity charges.

At Clearvolt, we’re helping UK businesses stay ahead of this shift, designing, funding and operating on-site solar, wind and battery projects that reduce grid dependence and stabilise long-term energy spend.
