The radiator's been won.

It's going to T. Riley in Blackpool. Congratulations from everyone at the shop.

The winner was drawn at random on Thursday 1 October, from everyone who entered across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

Thanks for all the comments. We've got a much better idea now of what people round here are trying to sort out in their houses.

If you didn't win: we're on Woodlands Road six days a week, and we'll size a radiator up with you at the counter whether you're buying one from us or not. Bring the measurements of the room and the number of outside walls.

Our logo, piped up in 15mm copper. Watch for the three words on the way through. They're what's coming next.

Designed. Installed. Finished.

Up to now we've been the place you buy from. Bathroom design and fitting is coming soon.

That's all we're saying for now. Follow us and you'll see the rest here.

Should we pipe this one up for real and put it on the showroom wall?

Before you price up a new toilet, take the lid off the cistern.

A lot of running toilets come down to one part in there. Either a washer that's perished and stopped sitting flat, or a flush diaphragm that's gone hard and isn't sealing any more. Both are small. Both are the kind of job you can do yourself with the water off and a bit of patience.

The telltale signs are a trickle down the back of the pan that never quite stops, a cistern that takes an age to refill, or a flush you have to hold down to make work.

There's a Siamp stand in the shop with cistern spares and flush valves on it, and whoever's on the counter can help you work out which one you're after.

One thing though. Bring the old part in with you, or at least a photo of the inside of your cistern with the lid off. Describing it never works. There are a lot of parts that sound identical over the counter and aren't.

Spread the cost with flexible finance.

There are two routes. Interest-free at 0% APR runs over 12 or 24 months. If you'd rather bring the monthly payment down, longer terms of 36, 48, 60 or 120 months are available at 12.9% APR fixed — up to ten years. A longer term means a smaller monthly payment but more interest paid overall, so it's worth putting both through the Ideal4Finance calculator before you decide which suits you.

The usual route is to come into the showroom or the trade counter, choose what you need and agree the total with us, and then apply online for that amount. If you're planning a full bathroom rather than replacing a single item, it's worth booking time with Jordan first so the spec is settled before you look at the finance side.

Visits, planning advice and product recommendations are all free, and there's no obligation to buy at the end of it.

A deposit may be payable — we will agree this before you begin your application.

Representative example: A £5,000 purchase with a 25% deposit of £1,250 leaves £3,750 of credit over 60 months at 12.9% APR fixed: £85.13 a month, £5,107.93 total repayable, and £6,357.93 total cost including the deposit. There are risks involved in taking out a loan and you should ensure you can make all payments on time and in full; failure to do so can lead to financial difficulties and have a negative impact on your credit score.

Turn your heating on for ten minutes this week. Not because it's cold — because if something's wrong, September is a much better month to find out than November.

Then walk round the house and put a hand on every radiator, top and bottom.

Cold at the top, warm at the bottom: that's air. Bleed it. Key in the valve at the top corner, quarter turn, catch the drip with a cloth, close it as soon as water comes instead of hiss.

Cold at the bottom, warm at the top: that's not air, and bleeding it won't do anything. That's sludge settled along the bottom of the radiator. It needs looking at properly rather than fiddling with.

A radiator that's stone cold all over, with a TRV on it: try lifting the head off and pressing the little pin underneath. They seize up over the summer when they've sat open all season. Half the time it drops back down and the radiator comes to life.

While you're at it, look at the pressure gauge on the boiler. There's a normal range marked on the dial — check yours is sitting in it while the system's cold, and if it isn't, that's worth a conversation before the cold weather.

And check the towel rail. Everyone forgets the towel rail.

Anything you need — bleed keys, TRVs, lockshields, spares — we're on Woodlands Road and you don't need an account.

Picking a bathroom sounds like picking a bath. Mostly, it's picking finishes.

Brassware, handles, the colour of the unit — they're what you'll actually look at every morning, and they're the hardest thing to judge off a screen. A brushed brass tap can look like six different metals depending on the photograph.

So they live in a drawer in the showroom, in the same light as the units they'd be going on. Pull it out, put two next to each other, and it takes about a minute to know.

You don't need an appointment to come and look round.

Every radiator needs two valves, and they're not the same thing. Fitting two of the wrong one is one of the more common jobs we end up sorting out.

One end controls how much hot water goes in. That's either a plain wheelhead valve or a thermostatic one — a TRV, the one with numbers round it.

A TRV doesn't measure the water. It senses the air around it and closes down as the room warms up. Which is why covering one with a curtain or standing a sofa in front of it makes the room too hot: the valve thinks the job's done long before the room agrees.

One thing worth knowing — don't put a TRV on the radiator in the room where your main thermostat is. The two of them end up arguing, each shutting down for reasons the other can't see.

The other end takes a lockshield. That's the one with the little cap over it. It's set once, when the system is balanced, so that every radiator in the house gets a fair share of the hot water. Then it's left alone. It isn't a second on/off tap, and turning it because a room feels cold is how you make the room at the other end of the house colder.

Angled or straight depends on where your pipe comes from — up out of the floor usually wants angled, out of the wall usually wants straight. In most houses the valves are 15mm, but check, because it isn't always.

Easiest thing: take a photo of what's there now and bring it in, or bring the old valve itself. Collection from the trade counter is free and same day.
