21 Days | Day 3: Your Latest WIP

This is my current WIP. It’s a commission that I’ve temporarily hung in my lounge to see if it’s finished. I think it may be missing something but not sure what that is yet? 🤔

Second year of taking part in the challenge can’t say I posted much since last Jan but I enjoyed doing it so thought I’d give it another go.

Favourite painting is always a tough one, I appreciate them and enjoy looking at them but I feel a little disconnected once complete, I do have ones which I find more intriguing. I don’t really have a favourite but maybe this should be measured in the enjoyment of painting it rather than what it looks like?

I can’t say my tastes have changed since last year, I often prefer the muddier more earthy pieces that aren’t so popular. I’ve gone for a very similar piece with more texture and darker tones. I think my choices are definitely influenced by the time of year!

21 Days | Day 21: Big Dream

A big dream for me is to just make art; having the security to be able to step away from teaching in order to dedicate more time to my practise.

Just going to put that one out to the universe and continue working hard, hopefully it will become my reality one day.

Photo of me, I look about 2 or 3 so would hazard a guess at 1993 or 1994. I presume this was my first abstract wall art, a strong start wouldn’t you say? 😂

Still use my hands to paint now!

thank you so much for creating a welcoming and inclusive challenge. My first ever but hopefully not my last.

Started this account 21 days ago and so proud of myself for posting (nearly) everyday. We made it! Well done everyone it’s been so lovely to be part of this fabulous creative community. Thanks for following along, take care and see you soon 🙌

21 Days | Day 20: Favourite Technique

Can’t choose a favourite; I love using different techniques to achieve interesting and varied mark making.

• splattering • sgraffito (scratching back in) • layering texture • blending• washing • wiping back • scumbling •

All applied with a variety of tools.

My favourite outcome is probably texture. I love running my hand across a finished piece. I find a joy in the tactility of it, a continued connection once the painting part is done. Does that sound weird? 😂

penultimate post!

21 Days | Day 19: From the Archives

These are the only paintings I have from my school days (apart from a hippo I painted when I was four that lives at my parents house).

Painted in 2008, I was 16 and studying Chuck Close.
At this time I really struggled to finish anything, I was so hung up on perfection that I think I was scared for something to be finished in case it wasn’t ‘perfect’ which made me anxious to continue or start painting anything (sounds bizarre I know!)

As a result I didn’t have anything to hand in and ended up failing my art A levels which meant I couldn’t go and study art at uni.

It wasn’t until I came back to painting in my early/mid 20s that I realised I had been focusing too much on the end result and the achievement of something looking ‘good’ rather the process.

Somewhere along the way we loose this, from making care free art as children to being worried what others think when we get older.

Once I realised this, and started making art for me, so many opportunities opened up as result.

I’m now an artist and art teacher and have daily battles with my students about throwing work in the bin 😂

The paintings are of my dad and my class mate (Helen Bur - now an international artist).

I still love portraiture but am now definitely a lot looser with my work.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

21 Days | Day 18: Celebrate!

Wow, struggled with this one, there are so many art related things to celebrate, so I’ve chosen a few.

Today I celebrate:

• Friends + Family •
Who have encouraged me and pushed me to take my art further, supported me at art shows and markets, even helped me pour the foundations for my studio!

• Me •
Having the courage and circumstantial ability to pursue something that I love (guilt free). How far I’ve come and the exciting things that are yet to be.
For nearly completing my first ever insta challenge (even if I’m a bit behind).

• Surroundings + Community •
Having an amazing studio space to paint in and living in such a beautiful area full of inspiration and creativity.

Last but not least I celebrate • A R T • because it brings me joy and I have no idea what my life would look like without it!

Thanks for giving us the space to celebrate ourselves 🙌 so many amazing stories.
