🌿 A quick note about nesting season and hedge cutting… 🌿

Every year around this time I see posts shared saying that it’s illegal to cut hedges or carry out tree work during nesting season. .
It’s a well. intentioned message, but it isn’t quite that straightforward.
The law protects nesting birds and active nests, which is exactly as it should be. It is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy an active nest, or disturbnesting birds. What many people don’t realise is that there isn’t a blanket ban on all hedge cutting and tree work throughout the nesting season.
The March to August restrictions people often refer to mainly relate to certain countryside and agricultural hedgerows. Most domestic garden hedges are exempt from those particular regulations.
That doesn’t mean wildlife should be ignored. Far from it.

Anyone who knows me knows that I spend most of my working life outdoors, and looking after the natural environment is one of the reasons I enjoy this job so much. Before any hedge cutting or tree work is carried out , I always undertake a thorough inspection of the vegetation and surrounding habitat.
If there’s evidence of nesting activity, the work is postponed or adapted accordingly.
Wildlife protection isn’t just a legal obligation, it’s a personal one too.
Trees and hedges still sometimes need maintenance for safety, access, property management or plant health reasons, but it should always be done responsibly and with proper consideration for the wildlife that may be using themn
If you’re unsure whether work can be carried out on your trees or hedges, feel free to get in touch. I’m always happy to offer honest advice.

🌳 Protect wildlife. Follow the law. Manage trees responsibly.

Sadly this apple tree had suffered structural root failure, my customer asked if there was anything we could do to retain the tree as it’s very special to them .
After a thorough inspection of the situation it became clear one of the main structural roots had failed some time ago, meaning its demise was inevitable.
Underground it had started a recovery job, putting on lots of new rootstock, instinctively throwing a thick plate root out in the direction of the failed one . Sadly it was too little too late .
The presence of healthy vibrant young root encouraged me to advise removing the entire crown, exposing as much root as possible and scarring them with a sharp blade to stimulate trauma growth.

A permanent staking job , adding fish blood and bone , and compost and I think we have saved the tree .

Varied Monday to start another week .
Regular trim of some laurels in Broughton Astley then off to Lutterworth for the removal of a troublesome branch over a swimming pool, Greenacres estate to dismantle a Norway spruce who’s roots are heaving a path, and have reached the house .
Finally a beech hedge trim, still a young hedge but is growing at different rates, trying to equalise it for form , great result .
At the same house I built a platform for a pigeon who constantly builds nests there but they collapse .
Variety is the spice of life !!

My customer loves this apple tree, great fruiter, sadly failed in the wet ground but all was not lost . Plenty of root there to keep it alive with a bit of propping.

Multi stemmed sycamore was starting to become oppressive, lots of solutions were discussed, the most drastic was a pollard , however the customer liked the tree and wanted to retain a crown .

Large lower laterals removed to lift the crown, and a very tricky reduction done to remaining crown .

My customer was delighted with the outcome, and as a tree with not central leading stem , I was also really happy with what we achieved .
