Today I took the kids to the Edenbridge & Oxted Show and honestly, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as being a Luton gal we’d never been to a show like this before.

A little while ago I was asked to create a video encouraging children to get involved in the show’s horticulture competition, which I was really happy to support. The show kindly gifted us Members’ Area tickets so that we could come along and experience the day for ourselves.

And what a day! 💚

There was SO much for the kids to see and do! animals, tractors, displays, competitions, food, activities and plenty of things I definitely wasn’t expecting to find at a farm show (the knights was definitely an added bonus)

The children especially loved meeting the hounds and I loved seeing them so interested in all the kids horticulture competitions.

If you are local to that area and have children who love growing things, creating things or getting involved in competitions, definitely keep an eye out for the horticulture competition next year. 🌻🥕🍅

Thank you to the Edenbridge & Oxted Show for having us, it was such a lovely first experience, and we’re already talking about what we want to see next time ☺️

Before we went away I sowed some Pak Choi and winter lettuce. Both have been popped into my greenhouse to germinate and the Pak Choi I will grow outside (it will replace my cucamelons). At this time of the year the lettuce would also be fine going outside but if you are sowing it later it may require a bit of cover for the colder nights.

I’ve also shared a few other must sows for me over the next few weeks and a lot of them are leafy greens.

Back to reality for us today so will be fun to see if my Pak Choi and lettuce have germinated ☺️

I launched our gardening sessions back in March with the hope of creating a regular space where home-educating families could come together, get outside and enjoy learning through gardening. 🌱

Every few weeks since then, we’ve sown seeds, watched things grow, harvested what we’ve grown, played in the space, discovered the wildlife around us and, of course, got our hands very muddy!

But as we head into autumn, I’m particularly excited about what’s to come.

Autumn marks the beginning of a new horticultural year, which means that the children joining us now have the opportunity to experience the whole growing process — right from the very beginning.

From preparing the ground and sowing seeds, to caring for plants, watching them develop, harvesting and learning what happens next. There’s something really special about being able to follow that whole cycle PLUS there’s so much we can do for the wildlife that shares our garden too.

We’ll be exploring ways to support pollinators and other garden visitors, creating habitats, noticing the creatures around us and learning how we can make our growing spaces welcoming for wildlife.

Most importantly, these sessions are about coming together. There’s time to learn, explore, get stuck in, play, chat, make friends and simply enjoy being outdoors.

So if you’re a home-educating family or have children under 5 and are looking for a relaxed, hands-on outdoor activity, I’d love for you to join us.

Our next session is Tuesday 8th September at Within The Walls and booking can be found by following the link in my bio ☺️

I’ve got work to do and I’m doing it all smelling like lavender because let’s be honest what other scent would I choose 💜

meeting my deodorant priorities:

1. all natural
2. refillable (less waste)
3. super cute purple case 😬

If purple ain’t your thing there’s loads of other colours and scents to choose from AND you can use my discount code: YOUNGGROWERSCLUB for 15% off.

I gave up watering my potatoes a few months ago just because I just didn’t have the time to water everything and I knew even without water they would provide me with something.

I’m so happy with yield but the lack of water has meant most of the potatoes are quite small.

Potatoes will always be a crop I grow at the allotment and this year has proved to me that they’re definitely a must have if we continue to have drought years.

Also apologies for my out of breath voice, I was trying so hard not to sound like I have a bad cold but I’m not sure I succeeded 😬.

Maybe it has been the heat making these bitter but considering I’ve grown loads now and none of them have been nice it’s time to accept defeat and use the space for something delicious.

I have extra basil going in because we love it and then I’ll be planting lots of parsley to take me across autumn and winter.

Being at my allotment feels like a ghost town. One of my next door neighbours is still there regularly but it feels like everyone else has given up.

With ‘water gate’ at my allotment and the weather generally I’m not massively surprised. Is anyone else’s allotments looking like overgrown wasteland?

Egyptian walking onions, sorrel and Mexican mint are the plants currently growing away in my greenhouse which I will be adding to the allotment.

I’m about to also propagate some more of the perennial herbs from the garden and I’ll also be doing a seed order for some other perennials I can sow now. I will let you know what they once I get them.

The kitchen garden at is beyond beautiful. The colours, the structures, the perfection of the veg (honestly you should see the cabbages) and just the way each space is utilised to absolute food growing perfection but I know that the main ingredient to this perfection is a dedicated team of gardeners. So as my allotment is just me, myself and I (with the occasional draft in of a family member or friend) I’m being realistic about what I can achieve alongside having a garden, family and a business. Also I want to create a space which is resilient and more hands-off so I’m taking inspiration from another area of the garden. This area definitely had ‘food forest’ vibes and I got very excited about all the different perennial veg and flowers as well as the pumpkins making use of the space which is exactly what I intend to do next year.

If you happen to be heading to Wisley I definitely recommend checking out this area which is next to the Orchard near the main kitchen garden ☺️

The more I see which plants are doing well the more is cements the fact that I’m doing the right thing turning my allotment into a food forest.

Trees, fruit bushes and perennials are all doing ok with absolutely no water whilst many of my annuals are struggling and that’s with giving them a good water.

I know that by prioritising these at my allotment I will be creating a resilient space that will feed my family and friends even through the toughest weather conditions and with minimal effort in the long run.
