There’s really no such thing as wasted space if you design around it properly.

This awkward area under the stairs has been turned into practical storage, with shelving, shoe space, seating and plenty of room for coats – all made to fit around the staircase.

Bespoke is particularly useful when nothing off the shelf is going to fit.

From this… to this.

A timber frame on the floor doesn't give much away, does it?

But that was the starting point for this bespoke oak hi-fi and vinyl unit, designed around the customer's equipment, their record collection and the space available.

The finished piece gives them masses of adjustable shelving for the vinyl, dedicated space for the hi-fi equipment, a generous full-width surface and plenty of useful storage underneath.

A good example of why bespoke works so well. Start with what needs to go into the furniture, then build the furniture around it.

From this… to this.

It doesn't look like much in the first photo – just the beginnings of a timber frame against an empty wall.

But there's a plan behind it.

The finished piece is a completely bespoke hi-fi and vinyl unit, designed and made specifically around the owner's equipment and record collection.

Plenty of adjustable shelving for a serious amount of vinyl, dedicated space for the hi-fi, a generous surface for the turntable and equipment, plus cupboards and drawers below for everything else.

That's the nice thing about making furniture from scratch. You don't have to find something that's nearly right. You make something that is right.

There's always that awkward bit in a loft.

Too low for a normal wardrobe. Too oddly shaped for standard furniture. And usually destined to become somewhere that collects boxes.

Not here.

Shelves follow the slope, hanging space sits where the height allows it, drawers make use of the lower sections and the cupboards continue right up into the roofline.

It doesn't mean every cupboard is the same shape – quite the opposite. It means every cupboard is made to do the best possible job with the space available.

That's the beauty of made-to-measure.

Sometimes it's the little details that make the biggest difference.

The simple painted doors keep this installation deliberately understated, while the recessed timber hand openings introduce just enough contrast to hint at the oak interiors behind them.

No handles stuck on afterwards. No unnecessary fuss. Just a detail that's practical, tactile and becomes part of the design itself.

Then open the doors and that same timber continues through the shelving and drawers.

Simple from a distance. Plenty to notice when you get closer.
