Over the last few weeks, our engineers at Technicus Consulting have inspected several properties suffering from serious crack damage and structural movement.

The causes? In many cases, problems that could have been prevented through routine maintenance, including:

• Leaking or defective guttering
• Blocked or damaged drains
• Rainwater pipes discharging beside foundations
• Overflowing water butts
• Tree-related clay soil movement

Small maintenance issues can lead to major structural problems if ignored.

Most people service and MOT their cars every year — but many forget that buildings also need regular inspection and maintenance to remain safe and structurally sound.

A leaking gutter or blocked drain today could become a costly structural repair tomorrow.

Many property owners are also unaware that structural movement caused by poor maintenance, poor workmanship, and poor design is often NOT covered by their buildings insurance. These are not considered insured perils, even if your policy covers subsidence related damage.

If you notice cracks appearing in your property, act early. Identifying the cause quickly can often prevent much more serious and expensive repairs later.

Our experienced engineers have helped thousands of clients investigate and resolve structural movement issues in homes and commercial buildings.

If you’re concerned about cracks or movement in your property, contact Technicus Consulting today for expert advice and a free quote for a structural survey inspection of your property.

After yesterday’s dramatic rainstorm outside the office, we were treated to the most incredible double rainbow stretching across the coastline 🌈

Moments like these are a reminder of how lucky we are to work by the sea — fresh coastal air, ever-changing skies, and views that never disappoint. With warmer summer days just around the corner, the office outlook is looking brighter than ever ☀️🌊

Here’s to longer evenings, seaside strolls after work, and making the most of our amazing location. Summer can’t come soon enough!

We recently had the chance to visit a new depot at Needham Market, where we supported L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage Ltd with structural design and consultancy services. The depot will play a key role in supporting operations for the Sizewell C Power Station project.

Our work included coordinating geotechnical testing and designing the hardstanding foundation slabs for:
✔️ A Zappshelter workshop for servicing heavy plant machinery
✔️ A surface-mounted Trime plant machinery wash bay (coming soon)
✔️ Fuel tanks and storage areas

The Zappshelter workshop is now installed and looking great, and with the wash bay soon to follow, the site is well on its way to becoming fully operational.

We wish the Lynch team every success with the new depot and look forward to seeing it support the Sizewell C project and beyond for years to

It’s been a pleasure working with SMartin Builders Ltd, Rookery Park Golf Club, and East Suffolk Council Building Control to help deliver this exciting project.

Even better is hearing directly from club members about how much they’re already benefiting from the improved accessibility the new lift provides. Great to see the impact it’s making.

Technicus Consulting was delighted to support local signage specialists Seaward Safety Ltd with the installation of their new state-of-the-art HP Latex R1000 Industrial Printer at their Lowestoft facility.

Working closely with Welton and Ian Williams from Seaward Safety, alongside their printer suppliers and installers, Technicus Consulting carried out a detailed structural adequacy assessment of the existing mezzanine floor structure to ensure it could safely support the new 1400kg printer installation.

Our involvement included:

• A comprehensive structural survey of the existing steel-framed mezzanine floor, including the cold-formed steel joists and decking boards.
• Structural analysis and adequacy checks of the existing beams, columns, cold-formed joists, and 38 mm thick chipboard decking under both uniform distributed loads and concentrated point loads.
• Structural design and specification of additional steel support beams required to safely carry the high concentrated leg loads from the new printer.
• Advice and guidance on temporary works requirements to enable the safe removal of the existing 750kg printer and installation of the new 1400kg printer across the mezzanine floor.
• Preparation of design summary drawings, including plans, sections, and details, to assist the installation contractor with the strengthening works, temporary works, and printer installation.

The strengthening works and temporary works required to safely install the printer were expertly carried out by local contractor P J Spillings Ltd.

With the new printer now installed, Seaward Safety has significantly enhanced its production capabilities and can print directly onto a wide range of materials, including Dibond, self-adhesive vinyl, magnetic materials, polyester film, photoluminescent signage materials, and rigid plastics.

It’s always rewarding to provide structural engineering and consultancy support that helps long-standing local businesses invest in new technology and continue growing their services.

Technicus Consulting is delighted to be providing Structural Design and Consultancy Services for the extensive remodelling and extension of a beautiful 18th-century thatched cottage in Norfolk.

The property had previously been extended with a single-storey addition. Working with Archidite Architects, the client developed a new scheme to replace the original extension with a thoughtfully designed two-storey extension, creating additional space while respecting the character of the historic cottage.

Technicus Consulting was appointed to deliver the structural engineering design and consultancy for the project. Our scope of works has included:

1. Trial holes and geotechnical investigations to determine existing foundation arrangements and ground conditions across the site to inform the design of new foundations.
2. Design and specification of a partial underpinning scheme to the original cottage, where existing ground floor timber joists were found to be undermining the shallow corbelled brick foundations.
3. Specification of temporary and permanent works to enable the safe reconstruction of a bowed, deteriorated, and structurally compromised gable end wall.
4. Design and specification of new foundations for the extension, accounting for shrinkable clay soils and the proximity of existing mature trees and shrubs.
5. Structural design of steel beams, lintels, and padstone bearings throughout the new extension.
6. Design of feature roof trusses over the kitchen area, incorporating a vaulted ceiling.
7. Wall panel design and specification of bed-joint reinforcement.

It’s fantastic to see the project now progressing rapidly on site. It has been a pleasure collaborating with our client alongside Timothy Bunn (Archidite Architecture & Interior Design) and Marcus Reeve and Casey O’Sullivan (T M Browne Ltd Construction & Building Maintenance) to help bring this exciting project to life.

We look forward to seeing the finished result once construction is complete.

At Technicus Consulting, we’re committed to the continued professional development of our team to ensure we remain at the forefront of the construction industry.

Yesterday, our staff took part in two valuable CPD sessions. The first focused on Lindapter proprietary clamp fixings for offshore applications, providing insight into innovative fixing solutions used in demanding environments. The second was the Institution of Structural Engineers & Temporary Works Forum Joint Quarterly Review Meeting, which covered key updates and important industry learnings relating to temporary works procedures, design practices, and lessons arising from previous collapses and failures.

Both sessions were highly informative and help ensure our engineers stay up to date with the latest technological developments, product innovations, and best practices across the sector.

A big thank you to Kevin Buttle, Kevin Dunnett, and Issac Sajith for taking part and continuing to strengthen our collective expertise.

Every day is a school day 😊

There’s nothing quite like seeing careful planning and structural design come to life. Today marks an exciting milestone in our work on the new accessible platform lift at Rookery Park Golf Club in Carlton Colville.

From the outset, this project involved detailed structural investigations of the existing building and the design of a new steel support frame to carry the precast concrete first floor, allowing for the formation of a safe, robust lift shaft. Our focus has been on delivering a solution that is not only economical and sustainable, but also ensures minimal disruption to the existing clubhouse structure.

This achievement is a testament to collaboration at every level. Technicus Consulting has worked closely with:
• SMartin Builders Ltd (Lowestoft) and OneSite Group Ltd on construction and steel fabrication,
• East Suffolk Council Building Control for regulatory compliance, and
• The East Anglian Lift Co (EALC) for the lift specification and coordination.

Thanks also to the club’s board, particularly Sean Ward and Stuart Punt, for their vision, and to East Suffolk Council colleagues Emily Bowman and Antony Ambridge for their on going support.

Seeing the project move from design into ex*****on on site is incredibly rewarding. We look forward to completion and, most importantly, to seeing all members of the local community enjoy a fully accessible and inclusive Club House.

Collaboration. Innovation. Accessibility. Impact.

Yesterday, Technicus Consulting staff members Kevin Buttle and Kevin Dunnett completed a 6-hour Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work training course, refreshing and strengthening their first aid knowledge and skills.

The training was expertly delivered by Laura Frosdick of GIFT - Gorleston's Independent First Aid Training, and proved to be highly informative, offering a valuable refresher on how to administer emergency first aid effectively and confidently.

We’re also delighted to share that both Kevin and Kevin achieved an outstanding 100% score in their end-of-course assessment, demonstrating their excellent understanding of the material and commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards. 🎉

While this training forms part of our workplace Health & Safety management policy, it also provides essential life skills that could make a real difference if ever needed — whether helping a colleague, client, friend, or family member.

These are skills we hope we never have to use, but are extremely important to have nonetheless. 👍
