Concerning times for the future of trades.

The apprenticeship system isn’t working for tradespeople, the chief executive of Screwfix has warned.

Only 2 per cent of sole traders, who account for a large portion of those working in traditional trades such as plumbing or carpentry, took on an apprentice in the past year, a report by Screwfix said.

With one in four tradespeople planning to retire within the next five years, and fewer young people joining traditional trades, the report forecast that there could be a shortfall of 250,000 tradespeople by 2030
