💷 Why can two solar quotes for the same home be thousands of pounds apart?

The final price isn't always comparing like-for-like.

One quote may include different panels, a larger battery, a higher-spec inverter, stronger warranties or more of the services required before and after installation.

It’s worth checking:

• Who completes the work? Some companies subcontract installations, while LJM uses an employed in-house team from survey through to completion.

• What equipment is included? Panel output, inverter quality, battery capacity, mounting systems and warranties can all differ.

• What else is included? Your quotation may need to cover system design, DNO applications, scaffolding, certification, monitoring setup, warranties and aftercare.

The cheapest quote isn't automatically the best value — but paying more doesn't automatically mean you're getting a better system either.

Our advice? Compare exactly what is included before comparing the price.

You’re not alone. DNOs are currently dealing with high volumes of solar and battery applications, which can mean some paperwork takes longer to process.

Your DNO manages the local electricity network and needs details of your new solar or battery system so the connection can be recorded or assessed.

At LJM, we submit the required documentation, respond to any further requests and regularly chase outstanding applications. If you’re currently waiting, please be assured that your paperwork hasn’t been forgotten and we’ll send it across as soon as we receive it.

🚩 3 solar red flags every homeowner should know before choosing an installer

Solar is a big investment, so choosing the right company matters just as much as choosing the right panels.

One of the biggest warning signs is pressure to sign immediately. If you’re being told “this price is only valid today” or “you need to sign now”, ask yourself why. A reputable installer should give you time to understand the quote, compare your options and make an informed decision without feeling pressured in your own home.

Another major red flag is missing essential accreditations. Always check that your installer is properly certified, including MCS certification. MCS helps demonstrate that the installer is working to recognised UK quality standards and is typically required if you want to access schemes such as the Smart Export Guarantee.

And finally, be cautious of anyone telling you that bigger is always better. The biggest solar system isn’t automatically the best one. Your system should be designed around your actual energy usage, roof space, budget and future needs — not simply around fitting as many panels as possible.

The right installer should be able to explain why they’re recommending a certain system, not just sell you the biggest package.
