/me + TERRAGNI = IIII IIIII
/when I mix my language with Terragni.

I discovered the Italian architect Giuseppe Terragni when I was a student in architecture school.

You find in Terragni the relationship with the past, the homage to history, with the presence of material, thickness, shadow, and light. That’s something you also find in Louis Kahn.

Finally, in Terragni, there’s something special, elusive, artistic, something you only find in the greatest artists: Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Bernini, Borromini.

Terragni’s architecture is timeless. It’s a reference point for any architect seeking inspiration. It’s an architecture lesson.

/me + Louis Kahn = |||| ||||

From my newsletter, arch001tect.substack.com :

"Even a room must be dark, it needs at least a crack to understand its darkness. But architects today, subject to the ease of a light switch, forget the infinite qualities of natural light."
Louis Kahn

In Louis Kahn's work, there's a genuine understanding of materiality's importance and its architectural application, not merely for construction, but because materials possess architectural interest, even SPIRITUAL significance.

We encounter this notion of spirituality in Louis Kahn's work, through his treatment of materials, light, and shadow. This combined approach brings a spiritual dimension to architecture. We find this spiritual aspect in churches. This is why I always maintain that the finest buildings are churches. For me, one of architecture's fundamental purposes is rediscovering the spiritual dimension in built environments.

Being modern is, above all, an attitude toward one's era. In every period of history, there have been moderns: Michelangelo was a modern in his time, Borromini was a modern in his, as was Alberti. Since the birth of architecture, there have always been moderns, we can also call them avant-gardists.

This collection of quotes captures Brunelleschi’s profound dedication to perspective, proportion, and innovation in architecture. His insistence on clarity, symmetry, and learning from nature highlights his role as a visionary who bridged medieval and Renaissance design, leaving an enduring mark on the built environment.
