"Building terms for babies" 👶🧱

Today's lesson: the Cavity Wall.

In grown-up terms: most homes built after the 1920s have two layers of wall with a gap in between. That gap helps keep damp out and can be filled with insulation to make your home more energy efficient — often one of the cheapest ways to cut heating bills.

Not sure if your walls are cavity or solid? We can tell you in 5 minutes on site. 📩

Wondering what actually happens once you get in touch?

Here's our process, start to finish:

1️⃣ Consultation — we visit, discuss what you want, and talk through what's realistic for your budget and property

2️⃣ Quote — a clear, itemised quote, no vague lump sums, so you know exactly what you're paying for

3️⃣ Build — work carried out on schedule, with regular updates so you're never left wondering what's happening

4️⃣ Handover — final walkthrough, snagging list addressed, and the job isn't "done" until you're happy

No surprises, no disappearing acts. Ready to start with a consultation? DM us. 📩

"Building terms for babies" 👶☔

Today's lesson: the Damp Proof Course.

In grown-up terms: it's a waterproof barrier built into your walls near ground level to stop moisture rising up from the ground. Very common in older South East London homes to need this checked or replaced — finding damp mid-renovation isn't a disaster, it's just Tuesday.

Worried about damp in your home? Send us a message. 📩

Thinking about an extension, refurb, or renovation but not sure where to even start?

This is your sign to just ask.

Budget questions, planning permission confusion, timeline worries, "is this even possible" questions — drop them in the comments or DM us directly. No question is too basic, and there's no obligation.

We'd rather you ask now than guess and get it wrong. 📩

''Building terms for babies" 👶🔩

Today's lesson: the RSJ.

In grown-up terms: it's a steel beam (Rolled Steel Joist) that takes the weight of your house when we remove a wall — most common in kitchen knock-throughs and open-plan conversions.

It's usually the biggest single cost in a wall-removal job, and for good reason: it's what stops your house falling down.

Curious what one would cost for your project? Ask us. 📩

"Building terms for babies" 👶🏛️

Today's lesson: Planning Permission.

In grown-up terms: it's formal council approval needed before certain building work — required if your extension goes beyond permitted development limits (size, height, or how much garden it covers). Skip it when you need it, and you could be forced to undo the work later.

Not sure if your project needs it? We'll check for you before you spend a penny. 📩

"Building terms for babies" 👶📋

Today's lesson: the Snagging List.

In grown-up terms: it's the list of small finishing touches or minor issues spotted once a build is "complete" — a bit of paint touch-up, a door that sticks, a socket that needs adjusting.

Any reputable builder should walk this list with you and fix everything before calling the job done.

Always ask for one at the end of your build — it's your right as the customer. 📩

Building work and gardens don't naturally mix — but a bit of planning protects the space you actually want to keep. Here's what we always do:

🔹 Boarding/protection sheeting over lawns and beds before any materials are moved

🔹 Designated access routes for skips and deliveries, kept away from planted areas

🔹 Covering drains to stop debris/cement washing into them

🔹 A clear plan for where waste and materials sit until removal, so it's not scattered across the whole garden

A messy site doesn't have to mean a wrecked garden.

Ask us how we manage this on your project. 📩

Most renovation regrets aren't about the builder — they're decisions made before work even starts.

The 4 we see most often:

🔹 Choosing the cheapest quote without checking what's actually included (labour only? materials too? waste removal?)

🔹 Skipping a written contract — always get scope, timeline, and payment terms in writing

🔹 Underestimating disruption — no plan for cooking/washing if your kitchen's out of action for weeks

🔹 Changing your mind mid-build — variations after work has started almost always cost more and delay the timeline

Planning ahead saves more money than any discount ever will.
