Great week subcontracting for TCE Electrical ltd through Theo Webster Electrical services installing specialist lighting at Imperial College London.

The project involved stripping out the existing lighting and retrofitting new Valoya LED strip lighting and drivers to help modernise the installation.

A huge thank you to TCE and Theo for the opportunity. It’s always appreciated, and I’m looking forward to working together again.

Also, a special mention to SW SPARKY - it was a pleasure working alongside you on the project.

🚨 Friday Failures 🚨

It’s been a few weeks, but here’s one from a recent job…

TT system earth rod and bonding clamp termination… and we’re using the word “termination” very loosely. 👀

On a TT system, the earth electrode connection is critical. A poor termination increases resistance, reducing the effectiveness of the earth fault path and potentially affecting the disconnection times required for the protective device.

This one was barely making contact, so it was stripped back, cleaned up and re-terminated correctly. 👍

It’s a simple detail, but one that plays a huge part in keeping an installation safe.

Media wall complete ✅

A tidy install with plenty of thought put into both functionality and the finish.

🔹 Data cable run at high level from one side of the chimney breast to the other, feeding a 3-port data outlet below for reliable wired connections to the TV, Sky Stream box and other entertainment devices.

🔹 Multiple Click Litehouse Scolmore International sockets installed to provide more than enough power for the Samsung TV, Samsung soundbar, electric fireplace, Sky Stream box and any future additions.

🔹 White accessories fitted neatly inside the cupboards (doors still to be fitted), with brushed chrome Click Scolmore sockets used on the visible sections to complement the overall look.

🔹 LED strip lighting controlled using a Forum Lighting Solutions Konect kinetic switch and receiver, giving flexible switching without the need for additional wiring.

🔹 Ring circuit extended to accommodate the new media wall installation, ensuring everything is safely and efficiently integrated into the existing supply.

🔹 Minor works completed with Kewtech tester and fully certified via Tradecert for peace of mind and compliance.

Another clean installation finished and ready for the customer to finish decorating and enjoy.

⚡️ The importance of earthing metal switches and back boxes ⚡️

Today I came across metallic switches where the CPC (earth conductor) had been left disconnected in the back box, simply left in a connector.

At first glance, everything appeared to work correctly , the lights operated and the installation looked fine.

However, under fault conditions, that small detail could become a serious safety issue.

If a fault occurred between the live conductor and the metal faceplate, the CPC needs to provide a low-resistance path back to the source to allow the protective device to disconnect the supply quickly.

With the CPC not connected, the metalwork could potentially become live and there may be no effective path for automatic disconnection of supply (ADS).

Even if the CPC had only been terminated onto the metallic back box, this would still provide an additional earth path through the fixing screws and help reduce the risk of the exposed metalwork becoming dangerous.

The correct method is always to ensure all required earth connections are properly terminated, secure and tested, it’s because often the small details that make the biggest difference.

A correctly earthed accessory could be the difference between a safe installation and someone receiving a dangerous shock. ⚡️

Is there a better feeling than drilling from outside and coming straight through the pre-drilled hole in the trunking end cap first time? 🤌⚡️

You can take the electrician on holiday… but you can’t take the electrician out of the holiday. 🇬🇷⚡️

Even in Greece, someone’s left the earth sleeving behind. 😂
