Elite Designers recently worked as the retained structural engineers, alongside Host Architecture & Design Limited and GLYNN WORKSPACE LIMITED, on the refurbishment of the Wimbledon offices of Peacock & Co Solicitors. The works extended throughout the building from the basement level to the third floor transforming the existing building into a more efficient and connected workplace by opening-up previously enclosed areas and creating flexible open-plan working spaces. A key part of the scheme was unlocking the potential of the large basement space. Previously used primarily for storage, it is now connected to the ground floor via a newly installed lift and is fully integrated into the office accommodation. In addition, the works allowed for the creation of a rear terrace area designed for staff socialising, just in time for Summer.
Elite provided extensive structural engineering input throughout the project. All floors were supported with new steel beam structures at each level, allowing the removal of internal walls and the creation of a more flexible layout throughout the office. The staircase was redesigned and structurally adapted to improve communication and flow between floors. Additional interventions included the formation of new openings within load-bearing masonry walls with structural frames, the removal of chimney stacks to maximise usable office space, and the design of the new rear terrace structure.
One of the most distinctive features of the project was the creation of an open and visually connected ground floor space. To achieve this, the staircase was partially suspended from the structure above, reducing visual bulk and creating a lighter, more contemporary feel within the interior. This approach also allowed the new staircase leading to the lower office and basement level to become an architectural focal point whilst enhancing the openness and natural flow of what is now a very stylish and attractive workspace for staff and clients alike.
