In recent interview with the The Standard, DOMstay founder Marta Nowicka talks with Prudence Ivey about the projects and experiences that shaped her approach to architecture, from her former warehouse home in London to remodeling a Grade II* building in Charles Square and an ambulance station in Rye. But perhaps most interesting is how that approach eventually became DOMstay.

After years of converting overlooked buildings, Marta began to question the idea of leaving beautifully designed spaces empty between projects. Instead, she started renting them out filling them with books, records, plants, umbrellas and all the details that make a place feel personal.

“We want to create a home from home.”

It’s a simple idea, but one that sits at the heart of DOMstay. Spaces should feel considered and genuinely welcoming, rather than simply designed to be looked at.

DOMstay founder, Marta Nowicka recently spoke with Victoria Brzezinski for The Times and Sunday Times about the story behind her approach to adaptive reuse and the renovation projects that have shaped her career, beginning with No. 16 Charles Square.

In 2005, Marta took on the derelict Grade II* listed building in Hoxton, transforming it into five individual homes while retaining the character and history of the original building. Almost two decades later, Charles Square remains an important part of her story but also, the story of London.

Now, as a new chapter for the building arises, a small number of the apartments are being offered for sale, giving new owners the opportunity to become part of its continuing history.
