🐭 Blocking a gap and proofing it properly aren't the same thing. Expanding foam and wire wool look like a fix, but rodents can chew through both within days — so the entry point reopens almost as fast as it closed.

Proper proofing uses materials rodents genuinely can't get through, like professional-grade galvanised steel mesh, and it's done alongside treatment, not instead of it, so you're not sealing anything in.

September is when rodent ingress really starts to climb — house mice are actively looking for a way in, and Norway rat activity is heading towards its autumn peak.

Worth knowing: a mouse only needs a 6mm gap (about the width of a pencil) and a rat can fit through 20mm. Loose vents, cracked brickwork and damaged pipework are the usual culprits.

Poison alone isn't a lasting fix — proper proofing is what actually keeps rodents out. Acting now is far less disruptive than dealing with an established problem in a month or two.

Cluster flies don't get the attention wasps do, but September is exactly when their season starts — and it's worth knowing about before they're an issue.

From now through October, cluster flies look for roof voids and wall cavities to spend the winter, often gathering in large numbers on sunny walls before finding a way in. Left unchecked, they can reappear en masse on mild winter days, clustering on windows and in roof spaces.

Proofing entry points now is far easier than dealing with them once they've settled in.
