Affordable CCTV still deserves a proper installation.

One of my first jobs since returning from holiday is dealing with this camera setup. Before going away, I dealt with three or four similar installations.

We all work to a budget. When I first started, I understood how difficult competing on price could be. An affordable camera can be a sensible starting point, but proper installation still matters.

Suitable outdoor equipment, secure cable routing and properly protected connections are all part of the job. Saving money upfront can become expensive if you later need to pay for repairs or have the installation done again.

There’s an old saying: “Buy cheap, buy twice.” That doesn’t mean everyone needs the most expensive system. It means looking carefully at what’s included in the price.

With this installation, I’ll be checking the Ethernet cable and RJ45 connection for damage. The aim is to repair any faulty connection where practical, secure the cabling and protect the connections inside a suitable IP-rated outdoor enclosure, instead of relying on the taped joint currently in place.

Testing will establish whether the camera itself is still working properly. Hopefully, we can get it back into service without replacing it—but putting the installation right will involve an additional cost for the customer.

I’m sharing this because these small details matter. Whatever your budget, ask your installer how the cables and connections will be protected, how the system will be tested and what support is included afterwards.

We have a few slots left this October for CCTV servicing and maintenance.
