If someone's quoted you a big number for a repair, or told you the whole boiler needs replacing, it's worth having someone else look before you commit to it.

I went to one where the customer had been quoted several hundred pounds for a full system flush, and the actual fix was a setting that wanted adjusting. That's not me being clever. It's what happens when someone diagnoses the problem properly rather than reaching for the biggest job on the list.

Sometimes the big quote is the right answer and the boiler genuinely has had it. I'll tell you that too. But you're better off knowing which one you're dealing with before the money leaves your account.

If you've been quoted something that doesn't sit right, get a second opinion before you commit to it. Doesn't have to be me. 👀

Is your radiator warm at the bottom but cold at the top? That's usually trapped air, and it's one of the few jobs worth having a go at yourself.

Turn the heating off first and let everything cool down properly. Doing this with hot water still in the system is how people scald themselves.

Get yourself a radiator key, they cost about a pound, and put a cloth or a small container under the valve.

Fit the key onto the square bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator and turn it slowly anticlockwise, no more than half a turn. You should hear a hiss. 🔑

When water starts to dribble out instead of air, close it back up. Don't over tighten it.

Work through the rest of the radiators the same way, then check the boiler pressure afterwards, because bleeding will drop it. If it's below the range in your boiler manual, it'll need topping up.

If a radiator keeps needing to be done, or it's cold at the bottom rather than the top, that's a different problem and worth having someone look at it properly.

Boilers don't tend to break down at a convenient hour. It's usually first thing on a cold morning, or the night before you've got people staying.

That's why I take emergency calls round the clock. No heating, no hot water, a leak, an error code you can't clear, whatever it is, ring me and I'll tell you straight whether it's something I can get to that day. 🔧

I work on all the main brands, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Glow-worm, Vokera, Potterton and Ariston, so it's rare I turn up to something I've not seen before.

Twenty years in, you get quick at working out what's actually wrong rather than what's easiest to charge for.

At some point in the next few weeks you'll put the heating on for the first time since spring. That first proper run is when most faults decide to show themselves.

Worth paying attention to what it does.

A smell for the first ten minutes or so is usually just dust burning off the radiators, and it tends to settle on its own.

Banging or knocking as it heats up can point to trapped air or a circulation problem.

Gurgling often suggests air in the system.

Kettling, that whistling like a kettle coming to the boil, can be a sign of limescale or sludge building up on the heat exchanger.

None of that means the boiler is about to give up on you. It just means something's worth looking at while it's still small.

Anything new or odd when it fires up, worth getting it looked at sooner rather than later.

Kids go back next week, so if the heating's on your list, now's the time to look at it.

Honestly, most of this you can do yourself in twenty minutes.

Stick the heating on for ten minutes even though it's warm. Sounds daft, but you'd rather find out now than on the first cold morning.

Have a feel down the radiators. Cold at the top? They may need bleeding. Cold at the bottom can be a sign of sludge or poor circulation, which is a bigger job.

Have a look at the pressure gauge on the boiler. Around 1 to 1.5 bar when it's cold is typical for many systems, but check your boiler manual for the correct range.

Then try and remember when it was last serviced. If it's over a year, get it booked in. 🍂

Anything on that lot you'd rather not be messing about with, or it makes a noise you don't like, give me a ring. I'd sooner sort it now than in November when everyone's phoning at once.

Give me a ring or WhatsApp me.

Every now and again someone leaves a review that sums the job up better than I could.

"Dean was very professional, knowledgeable and informative, and had time for all my questions. Will definitely be using him for boiler servicing, as I know I'm in safe hands." Stacey, Essex.

The questions bit is the part I'd pick out of that. Nobody should feel daft asking what a part does, or why something costs what it costs. It's your house and your money, and you're entitled to understand what's being done in it.

If I've sorted something out for you lately, a quick review on Google makes a real difference. ⭐

Most people can't remember exactly when their boiler was last serviced, and that is completely normal. The trouble is, a skipped year is how small faults quietly turn into winter breakdowns.

So Dean keeps it simple. Have your boiler serviced by him, and he will drop you a friendly reminder when the next one is due, roughly twelve months on. No pressure, no automated spam, just a nudge at the right time so your heating stays safe, efficient and under warranty. One less thing for you to keep track of.

Want to be on the reminder list? Give Dean a call on 07585 891644 and he will sort the rest. 🗓️

Boiler cover is one of those things you are glad you have the day something goes wrong, and forget about the rest of the year. The difference is that the big national plans can be pricey, and you rarely get the same engineer twice.

Through Corgi HomePlan, Dean can set you up with proper breakdown and service cover, but with a local, trusted Gas Safe engineer who knows you and your system looking after it. Annual service included, help when you need it, and peace of mind heading into the colder months, without paying over the odds for a call-centre badge.

Want to head into winter covered? Ask Dean how it works on 07585 891644. 🛡️
