Second-floor bedrooms still hot at bedtime? Before you blame the AC, you might want to take a look at the attic.

We have been on roofs across Dallas, Farmers Branch, and Carrollton through almost two solid weeks of 100 degree afternoons, and attic temperatures this time of year can run far above what people expect. Intake vents at the soffit bring cooler air in, and ridge vents let the hot air push out, so if one side of that system is blocked or missing, the heat just sits up there and works on the decking and the shingles from underneath.

We check intake and exhaust together, because adding one without the other usually does not fix much.

I got to walk out of my front door the other day, and the crew was already working on the roof next door. Boz is about a year and a half, so he didn't have much to say about it yet, but when he noticed all the action, he did not take his eyes off that roof.

It's the noise that gets him. Nail guns going, guys moving around up there, shingles going down one course at a time. He loved it!

Most kids in the neighborhood went back to school this week. Boz has a few years before that. Usually he can't come with me to a job site because our jobs are far enough out that I'm already gone before he wakes up. Today the job was next door, so all it took was carrying him outside.

"You know how meteorologists are."

Max shot this one on an install last month when something blew in that was not supposed to. Watch what actually happens when weather shows up in the middle of a roof replacement.

Short version: the roof was already dried in. That means the old shingles were off, the decking was covered, and the waterproof underlayment was down and fastened. The only areas still open were the ridges. The crew saw the storm coming about ten minutes out and got those covered before it hit.

No water got into the house. The roof finished that day.

This is why we watch the radar all day long on an install and why we dry in as we go instead of leaving a roof open overnight. North Texas weather does what it wants.

Sometimes you just have to take the plunge.

Storms rolled through DFW again this morning, with heavy rain and lightning across much of the metroplex. After back-to-back rounds of summer storms, roof damage isn't always easy to spot from the ground. Lifted shingles, loose flashing, and small leaks can sit unnoticed until the next heavy rain shows up.
Take the shingle in this photo, from a roof we looked at over in Rockwall. Even with heavy granule loss, you can still see where hail hit on a previous storm: a dark round mark where the impact cracked the shingle underneath the granules. Those cracks are exactly where leaks start, and you'd never catch them from the driveway.

Ever wonder what's actually under your shingles?

On a roof tear-off in Allen this week, our crew found five layers of old roofing stacked up. Five separate times this home had been re-roofed without anyone going down to the decking. Each new roof just went right on top of the last.
The catch with roofing over old material is that nobody inspects the wood underneath. Soft or rotted decking gets buried and keeps causing problems later.
That's why we tear everything off, all the way down to the decking, on every job. We check the wood, replace any boards that are rotted or won't hold a nail, then install the new roof the right way. Funny enough, pulling off five layers took longer than installing the new roof did.

Max has been in roofing for twelve years and says five layers is something he's only run into a handful of times. You really never know what's under there until the tear-off starts.
